Olham 164 Posted May 21, 2011 For all who are not deeply into skinning, but maybe able to attach some emblem or a letter or such, I have made a factory-new Albatros D.V (uprated). The file is uploaded, but may need some time to get the approval of the forum moderators, before you can download it. Enjoy it!
Shiloh 12 Posted May 21, 2011 (edited) Nice work there Olham! It's good to see a good variety of skins for download. Edited May 21, 2011 by Shiloh
UK_Widowmaker 571 Posted May 21, 2011 Nice clean lines Olham
+elephant 36 Posted May 21, 2011 Very nice, thanks Olham Those specification stencils on the port side souldn't have been a bit upper, (just bellow the cockpit), or I'm wrong? I would like to see from you, more generics if possible...
Olham 164 Posted May 21, 2011 (edited) I know you like more weathering, Widowmaker. Feel free to add the amount you like. You're wrong there, elephant - the writing was below the longitudinal center line, as you see here. Edited May 21, 2011 by Olham
+elephant 36 Posted May 21, 2011 (edited) Yes, your documentation is right, Olham, but not for the type of inscription your skin features... I have seen a twin row inscription as in your reference pic, below the centerline, but the triple row one as in your skin, above the centerline... I don't know weather the different type of inscriptions were manufacturer dependant, (most likely though). Edited May 22, 2011 by elephant
Olham 164 Posted May 22, 2011 Never seen the writing so high before. Even "THE VINTAGE AVIATOR REPLICA" has the writing in the lower half, as you can see here. All pics I have seen so far showed it low. http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/node/4854
DukeIronHand 8 Posted May 22, 2011 Beautiful skin as usual Olham. As I said previously...the white tail is quite nice looking. Wish I had some damn talent for skinning. Must be cool to paint your bird as you like!
+elephant 36 Posted May 22, 2011 (edited) As I said above, according to my references, there were two types of specification inscriptions. Some examples more: Twin row inscription placed below the centerline: Triple row inscription placed above the centerline: I found also this sole example of a triple row inscription centered: And yes! A DVa with a triple row inscription below the centerline like yours, but it seems kind of an exception: If I dig more into my books I could find more on this little detail... Olham 164 Posted May 22, 2011 That's quite a lot of evidence there, elephant. I just checked the book of JFM about MvR, and his profiles all show the three line inscriptions on the D.V centered, slightly lower. Perhaps it has something to do with the factory they were built in? There were Johannisthal-Albatros from the mother company, and also OAW-built Albatros. It is always interesting to learn more about these beautiful birds. For example, it was JFM, who had found out, that the winged creature in the little Albatros Factory emblem on the rudder was always looking forward, in flight direction. So, on the port side of the rudder, it looked to the left; on the starboard side it looked to the right. Even well experienced profile painters still get that detail wrong. If you find out more, please report.
Olham 164 Posted May 22, 2011 I just found these two on a quick search. Seems they didn't have na "Idflieg order form" that told them, where exactly the inscription had to be placed.
+elephant 36 Posted May 22, 2011 My further investigation on the matter, revealed that most probably the OAW built machines had the triple row specifications stencil above the centerline, just below the cockpit... I almost confirmed that, with numerous examples of D.IIIs with the distinctive OAW built, vertical stabiliser that cannot be mistaken. About Jim's, (JFM) profiles now, here is pic of MvR visiting a naval base with one of his D.Vs, (OAW built?), that the triple row inscription is clearly seen above the centerline: Here are the D.III OAW pics revealing the same type of inscription and placement: and a D.Va more, probably OAW built too, featuring the same characteristics of the specifications inscription: I wonder what Jim says about it...I guess his archives would be significantly richer than mine... Olham 164 Posted May 22, 2011 Fine pics - hadn't seen most of them. The last one especially - could be Jasta 8? You seem to be much deeper into the documentations than I ever was, elephant. Looks like you have pointed out another of the differences between Johannisthal- and OAW-built craft.
Olham 164 Posted May 22, 2011 (edited) Among the skins shown here http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww1/f/415/59 there is also a tendency towards the OAW type carrying the writing higher. Edited May 22, 2011 by Olham
+elephant 36 Posted May 22, 2011 (edited) I only rely on photographic evidence... Profiles have a great deal of personal interpretation involved! You are right about the last pic... Jasta 8 DVas, late 1917. Edited May 22, 2011 by elephant
Olham 164 Posted May 22, 2011 One reason why I never made any profiles, is that I have a brain like a sieve. I would simply forget about things I already knew. But perhaps I could try some profiles - just for the fun of making them - with your help. I'd pick a certain craft from a specific photo and work it out, and you give me the guidelines and later the corrections?
JFM 18 Posted May 22, 2011 Hello, You guys are on the mark. Generally speaking (always exceptions, as you guys noted), the three-lined weights tables were on OAW-built machines and situated closer to the cockpit, just under the manufacturer and Idflieg placards (which on Johannisthal-built Albatros Ds were situated forward on the nose [and on the leading edges of the lower wings near the interplane struts, and in the wing cutout above the cockpit]). The Johannisthal-built machines generally used the two-line weights tables (and there are a few variations of them) located between the horizontal datum line and footstep. Again, always exceptions here and there.
UK_Widowmaker 571 Posted May 22, 2011 I hope you dont think I was being rude Olham...I actually meant it's a very nice looking Skin (but, yes...as is the Widows way...I will rough her up a bit!)
Olham 164 Posted May 22, 2011 If you make a personal skin of her with a good deal of weathering, please don't hesitate to show pics, okay?
