OT--MvR in Steampunk Animation

A friend of mine pointed this out to me the other day:

 

War of the Worlds: Goliath

The idea is, after the failed Martian invasion in 1899 (covered in the HG Welles book), Earthlings rebuilt and reverse-engineered at lot of captured Martian equipment. This created a steampunk world, defended against the expected Martian 2nd attempt by an international force. Well, the Martians show back up in 1914 for a rematch. And guess who's leading the Earth air force? MvR :).

 

Anyway, might be of interest to some.

It's an anime.

I usually don't like mangas or anime.

But from time to time I see a pearl, like for example the great, great, great, "Ghost in the Shell".

They have good plot, stories.

This one seems interesting, and I do want to thanks BH for the heads up. At least it seems there isn't too many big round eyes.

 

Distinguish gentleman, if you like the cyberpunk theme, don't you dare to loose the "Ghost in the Shell" series and movies.

MvR is such an iconic figure. It's no surprise that he is featured in the film. In the early 70s remember reading a SciFi short story by Fred Saberhagen in his Berserker series. Berserkers were robots who were out to destroy all life (Like the Cylons in the old late 1970s Battlestar Gallactica). The gist of the story was that the Berserkers needed to send out a diversion prior to a difficult invasion. They had captured some scientists and one of them suggested using nine simulated personalities. They questioned the scientist about them and found out that one was blind in one eye, one kept getting thrown from his horse, one was a very religious man, one had tuberculosis and died at the age of 23, so they installed them into the one-man fighters and sent them off, but they turned on the Berserkers and destroyed the fleet. It turns out that he tricked the Berserkers and that the personalities were all WWI flyers - Ball, Bishop, Nungesser, Luke, Guynemer, Mannock, Voss, and MvR, and one other I can't remember.

I see what you mean about not liking anime too much, von Paulus - the figures all look and move similar.

Nevertheless, there are some pearls. Thanks for pointing out "Ghost in a Shell" - never saw it before.

 

I like some of the stuff Miyazaki has done, like "My neighbour Totoro" - a rather quiet immersive little film

about a child discovering and befriending the forest spirit "Totoro".

On the other hand, he made stuff with fighting and shooting for the elder kids in us all, like Porco Rosso.

Yes Miyazaki, is the leading figure in Anime. But apart from Akira I've never seen much of his works.

I tend more to SF and Cyberpunk themes.

If it does well at the box office, you can bet it will be a game. For my money, it's good looking animation and I'm sold. (...'be nice if they included a release date, other than simply 2012.)

Pardon me but Akira is not Miyazaki! Spirited Away is usually considered his best work, and it's certainly the most imaginative. I myself am partial to Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, and Howl's Moving Castle. Miyazaki is a master animator and universally recognized as one of the finest artists in world cinema. You chaps owe it to yourselves to check out his stuff, anime fans or no

True, Javito. Personally, I was touched by the very quiet and slow, but also so imaginative way "My Neighbour Totoro" is told.

"Princess Mononoke" is a bigger story, and it's great!

My main problem with MvR being the air force leader is that Boelcke would still have been alive and the better man for the job. But I guess nobody beyond us air combat aficionados has ever heard of him these days.
