+Gepard 11,295 Posted August 29, 2012 Its not ussual to detonate bombs of WW2. Normaly the bomb sweepers made the job to remove the detonator fuse. More than 100 times a year here in Germany. In Munich it was a long time delay fuse which worked on chemical base and it was to corroded to remove. So it was decided to explode the bomb. For such detonation the bomb will covered with light material to reduce the blast wave. In case of this bomb it worked not as it was supposed to be, so that some houses were dameged. Derk 265 Posted August 29, 2012 Imagine the havoc caused by let's say a 500 bomber raid, each carrying 10 of them 500 pounders............. The Schiphol bomb was removed and will be detonated in the polder about 5 miles away. Like in Germany a lot of unexploded ordnance is still found over here, leftovers from actual bomb attacks but also in a lot of cases stuff that has been jettisoned in emergency situations. Holland was the main transit area for the attacks on Germany and AFAIK some 7000 Allied and German planes came down here, a lot of them not salvaged yet Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
+Gepard 11,295 Posted August 30, 2012 The flame ball was caused by the cover material. They used a lot of straw to reduce the blast wave. But the forgot to make the staw wet (or not wet enough). So the bomb explosion not only blow away the straw, but also ignit it. So it came to a lot of minor fires. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
