My mother used to watch his shows because he was so madly enthusiastic about stars. She didn't know a dicky bird about astronomy but enjoyed watching him. He always looked as if he had just got out of bed without brushing his hair.

I watched Sky at Night because of him - loved his eccentricity. Many a British comic has done entertaining impressions of him over the years.

A good innings 89 but sad to see him go.

As a German with not much interest in astronomy I didn't know Sir Patrick Moore

and his program "Stars at Night". So I looked into YouTube and found this video.

For all who also didn't know him, and for all who liked his work, and himself.

He seems to have been a truely original character; interesting, humourful -

in two words: very British! May he now travel between the stars.

Rest in peace, Sir Moore.
