Nice photo. Judging by the belly underneath the fuselage it is the maritime patrol version of the Bear, the Tu-142. I guess such encounters weren't unusual during the cold war...

Actually it's a Tu-95RT Bear D. The Phantoms look to be F-4N's  from VF-51 and VF-111. The AV-8A is indeed from VMA-231. It is unusual to see attack types up for a peek at the bad guys.

I'm wondering which CV can be seen beyond with its central island, Essex, Midway or Forrestal-class ?

With a central island, I gess it should be an Essex class, or perhaps an Iwo Jima or Tarawa class Amphibious assault ship.

Migbuster,

November of 1976. VMA-231. USS F.D.R   CV-42 CAW-19. MED Cruise.  Tail Code "NM". They sent up the AV-8A because it had the 30mm Aden Gun. The Phatoms didn't.

I was there. Med Cruse 1976. 231 had just set the World Record for "Turn around Times".

Semper Fi!

P.S. It was actually 16 Aircraft. Two were down as "Hangar Queens". The Squadron had 24 Aircraft as a whole. "Det.A" as it was called. sent 16 aircraft with the remaining Aircraft staying at Cherry Point as "Det.B".
