Help with creating mission using submarine to attack land targets

Recommended Posts

Just starting out making a few A2A and A2G missions and the SF2 editor seems pretty straight forward when it comes to creating aircraft missions. But I'm not understanding how to create targets for water based craft. I understand that SF2 editor is primarily an aircraft game but was wondering how to utilize some of these add on objects that are available like submarine or destroyers that have weapons modeled into the mod. When I add the submarine for example , it just has it's co-ordinance , speed and how many. There's not an option showing what to target like it does with aircraft. I'm using Los Angeles class attack submarine by WhiteBoySamurai

And Strike Fighters 2 North Atlantic as the directions recommend. Says it has

( Improved version (688i) commissioned in 1985, using Harpoons, plus Tomahawk missiles in twelve vertical launch tubes.)     Just trying to figure out how to deploy them. Specifically to use tomahawks to destroy ground targets if that is possible.

@Wrench  Might know, as well, I don't think it has ever been done, but I would assume that if the sub detected it, it would fire at a ship, but not land targets to my limited knowledge.

ships to my knowledge attack ships and aircraft

my question would be do the SCUDs in game actually work (go and attack targets)? if so the work around might be to make a Los Angeles class "tank" that fires missiles.

that said, has anyone ever actually seen a sub attack a ship even in game?

we've had working ballistic missiles (and arty) since SF1. One of the things is making sure the launch/firing vehicle has a high enough veiwport (SEVERAL Km in the sky) to see to the horizon. IIRC, the original ODS and Op Darius had working IRBMs (I should know!! <grin>)

What's funny, is the Iowa class BBs will launch the Tomahawks as SAMs against incoming aircraft. Funny as hell to watch!

I've seen ships engage land targets with guns and missiles if the ship is close enough to shore.

I get what you are saying.  Or have an enemy destroyer be a land based object like a scud missile launcher or radar antenna. So the Tomahawk has something to target on land.

Here's a simple mission I just set up in the Persian Gulf.

The target was a group of SCUD vehicles on the Iranian coast, protected by AAA vehicles.

I also set up 2 Los Angeles submarines close to the Iranian coast. The one to the west of the target area was set up as an object group, the other was to the south and set as a naval fleet.

By the time I got to the target area both subs were pumping out Harpoons and there wasn't that much left for me and my wingman to hit.

Ships will do the same, engaging land and naval targets with guns and missiles as long as they're within range.

Here's a USN ship egaging a group of suspect dhows somewhere in the Persian Gulf

On the WW2 "Okinawa" map, I set up the landing beaches for the US invasion. Offshore, there are naval ships that just keep pumping out gunfire untile everything is destroyed or they run out of ammo!

Awesome ! Thanks for checking this out for me.  This is exactly what I was trying to achieve, and with the same terrain too. I tried to duplicate with limited success since I have not done much mission editing before. The process seems straight forward however I'm sure to be lacking some knowledge in some of the finer details.  When I add scud launchers, they do not show up as targets when in the game and pressing "M" for map. I don't see where they are placed ( in Red ) like in your screenshot above. Plus in some cases the submarines don't fire at times. Does the Tomahawk for example, have to be within a certain range of the launching submarine? Also does it need a direct line of sight or would the Tomahawk be able to go further inland and over mountains?   Would you be able to upload that mission you made here so I can review how you set it up?  Even if it's not a complete mission, I want to see how targets were set up specifically and any other details that I might be missing in creating a mission.

you're going to have to learn the Target Area Editor.

Also, there's a 50km "bubble of reality" surrounding YOUR aircraft. Nothing that's a game-generated Ground Object will exist OUTSIDE of the radius. Also, nothing that's a game generated (or target built placed Ground Object) will show on the inflight map until you get close enough. Exact distance changes with the winds.

Ahhh . These are the details I'm not aware of. This is helpful, Thank you for that bit of info.

Here's the mission.

Nothing too fancy included, although the SCUD units are, I think, from the YAP Straits of Hormuz mod, so swap them out for another model if you don't have them.

F_A-18E Block II Super Hornet Strike 1.MSN

Thank you allenjb42 ! I'll give that a look over later today and review it in the editor. :good:
