  1. My FPS in WOV has never been very high, but my current rig keeps them up high enough. There are several possible factors, but start with horizon distance. Since the newer patches, this seems to have a big effect on fps. Something to do with the new water and other terrain resolution enhancements. Another factor that is often overlooked is sound. In some hardware setups, you can unload your cpu and get better fps by reducing the number of sound channels used and/or reducing hardware acceleration for sound. The air defenses in WOV keep the pc busy in a large number of ways: special effects (SAM smoke and flak bursts) and sound effects (not only gunfire and missile sounds, but all those "SAM launched!" calls as well). If you can't get the results you want by tinkering with those two things, try setting graphics to low, then going to custom and tweaking one thing at a time until you identify which element(s) are dragging you down. I have everything cranked up on my system except for the horizon distance and I typically average 40 to 60 fps, but still dip down into the 20s when a lot of things are going on, typically during a ground strike run with heavy defenses and lots of aircraft/missiles all around.
  2. one email bounced. one other got a "sorry, we don't sell to individuals" another got no reply at all.
  3. The modders giveth and the modders taketh away. It is a good thing that I archive nearly every aircraft variant ever released for the SFP1/WOV/WOE series :)
  4. 3dsMax has to be used to make the final export lod file to be used by the game. Any other software which produces a file format that can be imported into 3dsMax will work, but you will have to give your files from the other software to someone with 3dsMax for the final export. There are no excpetions to this.
  5. For those who may not have noticed, this sim has been released and has a new forum: First Eagles: The Great Air War 1918. The boxed version is available in Europe. Third Wire now has an online store and is selling the download version for USA $30. Go here for more info: http://www.thirdwire.com/ While the programmer, TK, defines this game as a "sim-lite", the aircraft 3d models and textures are first rate and the flight models are far from arcade. The terrain engine is a bit dated, but looks adequate considering that the focus is on air combat. The air combat is intense, especially when using TrackIR w/Vector. This is both a fun and challenging game. Like all Thirdwire sims, the game is open to mods of all types including new 3d models/flight models. The graphics quality can be scaled down to run on all but the oldest/weakest machines. When run at the highest quality, only the terrain looks inferior. The aircraft and clouds are amazing.

  9. View File Wings Over Vietnam Enhanced Planning Maps Enhanced planning maps for the stock Wings Over Vietnam SEA Terrain, Version 1.0. This is a very basic supplement to make it easier to design WOV SEA missions. Paint Shop Pro 9 was used to combine the stock planning maps with text to mark key target areas. Kreelin's WOVQMD was used to identify target area locations and names based on the terrain files. The text is 50% transparent, which makes it a light gray tone. The low resolution map looks ok in the game... But I suggest using the higher resolution map (MAP2) for mission planning. The optimum WOVQMD mission design solution is using a desktop resolution of 1600x1200 with MAP2. Submitter streakeagle Submitted 11/15/2004 Category Planning Maps/Icons/Base Mods
  10. This aircraft was made available as a mod to Jane's USAF many years ago.
  11. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RF-101_Voodoo The F-101A was modified to carry a Mk 28 nuclear bomb. So it ended up acting as a TAC nuke bomber instead of its designed role of long range bomber escort. Not many built, but much sleeker than the F-101B and it had 4x20mm cannon instead of missiles. A key fact is that it was limited to 6.33g, whereas a later revision, the F-101C, was improved to 7.33g.
  12. The special weapon is a Genie missile, and I thought it was already in the weapons pack. At least one nuclear tipped air-to-air rocket has been released as I recall posts from those using the mod.
  13. I would prefer to see all versions. I like single seat with guns, two-seat with radar/missiles, and of course recon. If I could only have one version, it would be two-seat with radar/missiles since it would be the most useful for in-game fun/historical missions, though the recon variant is more useful for historical WoV missions. Early A model with guns would be pure fun though... so many choices to make.

  17. What Sony says. You can try new drivers. How much onboard RAM do you have? My dad's laptop uses a similar ATi integrated chipset and after I upgraded him to 1GB of RAM, his video works pretty well. He can actually play some games reasonably well at 1024x768.
  18. Perhaps you could create two engines at the same physical location: 1 that has vector nozzle and no afterburner and 1 that has afterburner but zero thrust when not in afterburner. The afterburner engine should provide an amount of thrust equal to the difference between the ab power and the other engine at military power. It just might work. Of course, the A/B thrust wouldn't vector, but it would be better than no ab power.
  19. View File F-4E Hi-Res Cockpit V1 After quite a few delays, I am finally releasing my next Hi-res F-4 cockpit: The F-4E. This one required more work than I expected. There were actually fewer photos of the F-4E panels available on the internet than the F-4B/C/D/J variants despite the F-4E being the most numerous production model. 21. The Korean War mod has always been one of my favorite SFP1 addons... I am happy to see it updated :)
  22. This sim has been under development for quite some time. Theoretically, they are close to releasing a base version that allows you to complete basic fighter training starting with a prop, moving up to the T-38, and finally flying an F-16. I hope they follow through and that the resulting product is good enough that everyone supports it with their $. If they deliver a product as good as they make it out to be and the gamers support it with their money, this could become the best modern jet sim ever made. But, I am not holding my breath waiting for it. Targetware promised a lot and took forever to before the first beta went public. I haven't tried it lately, but every time I have tried it over the years, I have been disappointed. Screenshots and promised specifications are one thing, a finished game that I like better than what is already available is something completely different :)
  23. Great! Now stop typing and get back to work!
  24. I have found some industrial sources of real sticks. These companies make stuff like dual F-15 throttles and in one case, MiG-21 controls! I doubt they sell to joe consumer and I doubt I could afford their prices if they did, but I just might be sending out some emails. http://www.ultra-msi.com/products/special_...rols/index.html http://www.mason-electric.com/products/con...rips/mig-21.stm http://www.essexind.com/manufac_page4.htm
  25. Yuck! What a mess. Sounds like this company is a rip-off anyway (at least for consumer-grade business). The joystick handles I can get... it was the throttles that were very interesting :)
