Its a german thing. The lenght of the barrel is important for the penetration power of a projectile. The messurement is in Kaliberlängen (caliber lenght). As longer the barrel as faster the projectile, but there is a relation between thecaliber of the barrel and the lenght too. What does it mean? Take a 2,0cm gun with a 200 cm long barrel, so it is a L/100 gun. The muzzel velocity v0 is very high. A 10,0cm gun with a 200cm barrel has only L/20. It is a short gun with low muzzel velocity, which is used in a howitzer or so. (in comparision, the D10Ts gun of the T-55 tank is a L/56 with 5,60 meter long barrell which can reach with subcaliber darts a speed of ca. 1.400m/s) The designation of a gun with Kaliberlänge was widely used during WW2, when german tanks had a lot of 7,5cm guns. There was a short L/24 in the first PzIV which was nearly useless against the soviet T-34. Later came the L/43, which gave the german tank a fair chance against the T-34 and finaly the L/48 which was very good to kill the T-34. For the PzV Panther a gun with L/70 was used and this had an outstanding performance. With a simple calculator you can find out how long the barrels of the different guns were.

I agree with you. Its a great book that give interessting inside views of the live on a carrier during the late Vietnam war. Its worth to read. Yep. I have played it a lot of time. I loved the Phantom more than the Intruder. But it was a nice game.

Es reicht ein falscher oder fehlender Buchstabe oder ein Buchstabendreher aus um im Spiel fehlende Sounds oder fehlende Bewegungen der Steuerflächen etc auszulösen.

This polish victory had 3 reasons. First they had a capable commander, second british officers supported the work of the polish staff, and last, but not least, the soviet politcommisar Tschugashvili was believing, that he was the most smart military on field, ignored the orders of his commanders and caused the defeat of the southern front of the soviets. Tschugashvili was also known as Stalin, and this georgian bastard never forgot the defeat on the banks on the river Wisla. In 1940 he got his revenge and sent thousands of polish officers into the death at Katyn. The path of one of my relatives ended there in the woods of Katyn.

Caliber is not all. The gun of the FT had a length of 21 calibres. The gun had so a lenght of 78cm and was useless against other armored vehicles. The gun of the PIII had L/45. It was 1,67 m long and was able to penetrate the most armors at the begin of the WW2.

Maybe there is an other reason, which has to do with pilots. Perhaps the Pentagon wants to have a fistfull pilots which have enough flight hours to be allowed to fly this plane. It would be bad if you still have flightworthy planes, but no pilot who could operate them. An other reason could be similar with the operation of MiG-23 in the soviet forces in Germany in the late 80th and early 90th. A lot of high ranking staff officers were pilots of the MiG-23. There was the rule, that a pilot must have some flight hours per year to keep his pilotwings. To give them the chance to fly without retraining them to a modern fighter type the soviets operated some MiG-23s, so that the staff officers could keep their pilotwings. Perhaps a similar thing is happen now in the USA.

Nice story. But did it really happen? Or growed the number of enemies over the years like the size of my last fished fish? I can clearly remember, that the pike i fished was as long as the span of my arms, it had eyes big as the eys of a bull and teeth long like the teeth of a tiger. One molotov cocktail is to less, because modern tanks have Freon anti fire systems. But this systems can be activated only 2 or 3 times. Translated text from the handbook: "With a molotov cocktail a tank of the opponent cant be annihilated, but harmed efficiently. A well placed molotov cocktail makes a tank unable to move and under certain circumstances it forced the crew to bail out. ..." Then follows the description how to made a molotov cocktail. Personally i liked the "geballte Ladung" much more, because we could play with some kilograms of Semtex (czech plastic explosive relativly similar to C4). I remember that one trainer made a do it yourself shaped charge explosive device which punched easily a hole trough a T-54 turret front. Was a nice big bang. Mixing of Thermit and later igniting was fun too. Cool fireworks. Only Napalm i disliked, it stinks pathetic.

The use of the VK-1 engine for de-icing the runways was common in the WP contries. Here one of the east german versions. It worked very well.
