VMFA-232 sent its last F-4N crew through TOPGUN in 1985 or 86. Air Force assets have flown during the TOPGUN course, mostly as adversaries, but also as blue assets during larger sorties. TOPGUN used to have an Air Force Weapon School graduate as an exchange instructor. I am not sure if they still do. The big difference between TOPGUN and Red Flag is that TOPGUN is a school for individual pilots to become tactics instructors, while Red Flag is a training exercise for units.

Hauksbee, Check the graphics requirements. "Cliffs of Dover" is very graphic intensive, way more than IL2 or the Strike Fighter series. I had to get an ATI Radeon Graphics accelerator in order to play Cliffs. Not sure if that is the problem, but that sounds like what was happening to me before I bought the accelerator.

Here is my list. "Mig Killlers of Yankee Station" by O'Conner gives a debrief of all of the Navy Mig Kills in Vietnam. "Crusader, Last of the Gunfighters' by Adm Gillcrist is a good book about flying the F-8 in and out of combat. "Night Fighters over Korea" by O'Rourke is a good story with many technical parts on flying the F3D. Lastly, the best debrief book with tactics about Vietnam is "Clashes" by Michel. This book is written like a TOPGUN debrief. The who is taken out of it, though if you know your history, you know who the players are in some of the engagements. (Olds, Cunningham, Ritchie) Here are some good links. "The Ault Report" http://www.history.navy.mil/branches/org4-25.htm This report led to better air to air missiles and more importantly, better training through the formation of TOPGUN. "Aces and Aerial Victories" http://www.afhso.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-100921-010.pdf Official Air Force debrief of every USAF MiG Kill in Vietnam. USAF Downloadable books at http://www.afhso.af.mil/booksandpublications/titleindex.asp -
I worked with Bill when I first got into the fleet. He was the Powerline SNCOIC and I was the OIC. Great first job in the squadron working with the Marines.

Since the paper was a help to the guys doing modding. Maybe these files will help. They are declassified performance data for the F3D, F7F-3N, and the F4U-4. I have a hard copy of the F4U-5N. Will have to scan it or write the data down. f3d-2.pdf f4u-4.pdf f7f-3n.pdf

Thanks Wrench, I was hoping it would help. Nice 5N. I can not wait for the new Korea Mod..

I know General Flock. It has been a few years since I saw him. I think he retired a few months back as a two star.

Posted the article in the Air Combat school area of aviation stories. Here is the link. I had two copies that looked the same. 50/50 chance this is my last rough draft vice the final draft, so if there is couple of typos, sorry. http://combatace.com/topic/62616-usmc-korean-air-war-night-fighters/

MAWTS does not have F/A-18 sims. They go to Miramar to do simulation.

This is a paper I did a few years back. CAUTION It is rather large with the diagrams and pictures. (7.7MB!) USMC KW Night Fighters.doc

I will have to figure out how to load my paper. The pictures and diagrams make it really large. It is 7.5Mg.

We do not fly our own jets so I am not Cha Chi. In fact, many of the Junior pilo'ts names are on the other side of the jet. Usually an F/A-18 squadron has 12 jets and 18 pilots. My callsign is Pyle. I am a big guy, especially for a fighter pilot. I played college football as a lineman. My first day in my first fleet squadron (non training) i did an impersonation of Pvt Pyle from Full Metal Jacket and the rest is history..

MaverickMike, Thanks for the help. I knew it must be something easy that a newby would not know. It looks awesome.
