Can you recommend any books, movies, or documentaries about Air Lifting & Support Units?
daddyairplanes replied to Skyviper's topic in The Pub
ok not as aircrew, but as a cook that wound up pulling duty as supply/ motor clerk/ guard shift leader on most of my deployments for the most part its just doing your job day in day out. pretty boring although the environment allows for some unusual things that you wouldnt see at home. its like Groundhogs Day the movie and the off the wall stuff become your time markers of the deployment pretty much the only time your massively, noticeably afraid is the first few times your under attack (rockets and mortars). after that you have some worry in the back of your mind, but you do what you got to and wait it out. if you are in a position to shoot back the you do. but if you're not, then you just deal with it in your own way (my favorite was taking bets on how many cigarettes a "rocket attack" would last until the all clear. right after professing my love for the recorded female voice that announced said attack. Kandahar 09) while way more common than in the US or western Europe, the attacks are pretty few and far between in some places. Others, well, you get used to these things (Balad Airbase, 04 aka Mortaritaville) howlywood and most games pack more action into a couple of hours than the average soldier/sailor/airman sees in an entire year. ironically, they tend to play those games and movies to kill time when off duty there (who else here can say they checked in after an indirect fire attack with a firefight from Blackhawk Down blasting in the background?) -

quite true on time to upload/download and wire up pylons in the case of the Guard units, they had a very small staff on all the time, and few flying hours during the normal week. so likely easier to leave em all on. i actually looked around at the pics i collected and another run at Google to say Svetlin was just talking about the Navy birds. I discovered that Guard birds typically had all pylons no matter what. a few pics even have just a travel pod or just a 119 jammer but the other 5 pylons on and empty! in fact, it was more likely in the Guard for the Winder rails to not be loaded than the wing pylons -

dont have to be a technocrat but if your going to mod (even as little as downloading stuff from here and adding it to your game) you need to learn a little lingo no worries, you are me, around a dozen years ago..... -

daddyairplanes replied to ThePony314's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
check the texture naming in the folders case in point, im working A-7Ds, with an A-7D_75 and A-7D_78. skins practically the same but if i forget to change from _75 to _78 when making a new texture, it will show up blank in game so look at the jpg or bmp names in the SPAD13 folder, and the names of working skins in SPAD7 then adjust your imported skins accordingly -

oh i agree on the no clean wings search results but the ANG birds didnt have the outer one added too often. so i made my adjustments to allow them to be blank..... ok checkin internets after typing, they didnt carry payloads often on the outermost stations. but all the ANG birds typically have all pylons on even if only one or no stations are used ok DA, why you gotta go screwing with ini's ......... -

well i do have some Viper skins planned , probably get to them towards end of summer though (the A models that would have been in Korea and Japan at the time) as for Centurion, it seems he's doing alright. but again, he's not active himself online. since he's alive and smiling, i'm just happy he seems ok and leave it be. but i have had to mention on a few threads discussing his work that he's not around on here anymore lately- 41 replies

these days its not all that hard really, espescially when im being picky. i've messed with enough of these (USAF patches) that i know roughly what the best approximate fonts are, how to place em fairly quick etc. now ten years ago when i made that first patch by cutting it out in PS......... more frustrating was that the Pennsylvania Air Guard was really screwy with their SLUFs. I made that patch just to realize that it was probably just for their Nellis deployment in 83. further, out of 4 possible camos, they stayed in traditional SEA until 84, only their two seater and one D model going to wraparouond camo. At least that i could verify by photo beyond that only three got painted the two tone gray at the end. frustrating, but in the end only meant i did three skins for them instead of four. -

City Night Light - Has anyone tried this before?
daddyairplanes replied to orsin's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
for the most part i'd say yes but pretty sure Baghdad and Belgrade were still lit up on night one. Hanoi doesnt exactly count because the US had been bombing the country for years by the time the restrictions came off in 72. but since i dont think we have a way to have the lights on only for the first night of a campaign, then best to leave it i still say it would be cool to target a substation on the first mission of a campaign and turn the lights out -

daddyairplanes replied to orsin's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
fairly realistic actually, if one of the 50 objects was also a transformer controlling the block or a local substation with those 50 lights as part of it but as you said, would then meant alot of work on the part of the terrain builder, and even with a set of patterns they would have to adjust the tile to the object rather than the object to the tile (as i understand it) -

yeah i hear you on the waiting part, and it is a rarer find on the internets got a hook up in pm tho, so Im good for now. huge thanks to Svetlin for sharing and Nyghtfall for already creating a really detailed AAR-45 skin that works on the old TMF model (goes back and eats words on "only so much a repaint can do".....)
