Upcoming Tweeks; an explaination
Menrva replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - World War II Forum
I strongly support this, Wrench! It surely makes life easier for the End User. Sometimes, I reuploaded entire terrain packages for little changes (something for which users should condemn me, LOL!). But it's also possible to simply add another zipped package with just the updated files alongside the original, complete aircraft package. -
Is it Possible to Overload the Engine?
Menrva replied to PFunk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
That's a very cool idea! Reminds me of the yet to be released Ace Combat 7; in its storyline there is a penal air squadron/battalion made up of convicts and probably even captured enemy pilots. I hate advertising my own stuff, but my remade Iraq/Iran terrains seem the perfect scenario as they include Teheran. Spec Ops helo missions from the Gulf all the way to the Iranian capital! The 1980-2003 version of the terrain has Iran set to Blue Side, but I think that through the campaign's .ini files there is a way to force Iranian bases as Red Side. At worse, I am always available to tweak the existing terrain and turn Iran to Red Side as default. -
Is it Possible to Overload the Engine?
Menrva replied to PFunk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
It's a pity. The CTD's cause might be a "stupid" one. For anything that's terrain related, I'm here to help! Just let me know. -
Is it Possible to Overload the Engine?
Menrva replied to PFunk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
Could also be a bug TK never bothered to fix. Or it could be a fault exception caused by the custom terrain you're using, which seems more probable to me. Of course it points to the TerrainEngine.DLL, the terrain's working logic is in that library. Which terrain are you using? In some custom terrains I made, I had to limit mission types for instance, or they would CTD (a lot of reasons, missing large airbases for bombers, no bombers spawn for one side during Escort or Intercept missions, etc.) -

Is it Possible to Overload the Engine?
Menrva replied to PFunk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
I have reason to believe it could be mostly due to the .ini files. Surely a weak PC will have trouble to render such high-res stuff, but I had numerous CTDs at loading, especially with some custom terrains. Turns out that it could be either the terrain's .ini files, or the ground objects' .ini files, etc. Someone a lot of time ago posted a thread about using Microsoft Sysinternals Suite to find the exact reason of CTDs. Not really user-friendly, but it seemed to work. I'll search for it and post the link if I am successful. EDIT: Here's the link: https://combatace.com/forums/topic/90077-sf2-loading-crashes/?tab=comments#comment-728035 I hope you can find it useful, PFunk! It talks about CTDs during loading, but the same approach applies to in-game crashes. -

Red Air Icons no longer showing
Menrva replied to HerkDriverJ's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Ditto. Either that or it could also be a blank MAPENEMYICON.tga file inside the Flight folder. Remove it if you want to see Red planes showing up on the map view. -
LMAO!!! Thank you for such threads/posts, Erik!

I need help
Menrva replied to jack33's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I am sure it's a bug in the tiles' alpha channels. I have seen it in other tilesets as well. -

Is there a way to replace the graphical moving map with a 2d map
Menrva replied to Phantomworks's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Not possible, but I like the idea. Unfortunately, the game is programmed this way. We don't have the source code, and we cannot force the game to show something else when pressing M in-flight. By pressing M, the game is programmed to show the terrain and its tileset from a sort of bird's eye view. -
Southwest United States for SF2
Menrva replied to JSF_Aggie's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
Me too. i just checked. Nothing to do with approval. Be careful, JSF_Aggie! The new version should not be uploaded as an attachment! The original v1.0 file can be removed and the 1.1 version should be uploaded in its place, instead. Just double check the interface when uploading the new version; you can remove the older file and reupload a new one, or you can upload the new one and also keep the older one. -
SU-34 "legend"
Menrva replied to UllyB's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
To my knowledge, that Su-34 model comes from Ubisoft's HAWX video game series. I downloaded the skins to find some clues, and I can confirm that they have the same mapping of HAWX 2's Su-34. Ripped 3d models from other video games are not allowed, AFAIK. -
Gameplay Balacing...
Menrva replied to PFunk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
daddyairplanes' idea is good indeed. The original Darius campaign also had Greek, Turkish and even German units, but AFAIK those were sort of what ifs; you could fly MiG-29Gs for the Germans, for instance. But the German Fulcrums were decommissioned back in 2003. So to stick to a more restricted and realistic OOB for Blue Side is the way to go, I guess. About the RWR, it's indeed one annoying problem. To fly in a F-22 and not being able to hear incoming missiles, all because of a few oversights in the .DLLs. -
Gameplay Balacing...
Menrva replied to PFunk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
Good thought. The original Operation Darius featured Chinese and Russian planes, but with what if IRIAF camos/roundels. To make it more realistic, instead of what if IRIAF planes, we could have Chinese and Russian aircraft in the campaign as well, as if they were visiting Iran when the Coalition's campaign starts. PFunk, if I understood well, the problem is that there are too many SAM emplacements, and so SAMs are a bigger threat than planes, right? Which terrain are you using for it? If there are too many SAMs, a few touches in the _targets.ini can be made to reduce the number of SAMs. -

An important question....
Menrva replied to timetraveler71's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
That's interesting, KJakker! I remember that our fellow Stary discovered a lot of additional statements inside the .DLLs. Turns out that most are non working though. This makes me believe that TK had a huge vision for Strike Fighters. But due to money and time constraints, various features have been cut or were not even developed. -
Upgrade for ODS...calling modders new and old
Menrva replied to daddyairplanes's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
I didn't notice on a first read. Basically, you just admitted of having used “my” work (“my” because it's not just mine). I don't remember I gave you permission for doing such a thing. The IraqWA terrain even contains two exclusive 3d models which have been made for me by a fellow modder and friend. You have no authorization to use my work and that of other modders who contributed to it. I didn't sign the Freeware License Agreement here at CombatACE, so you're not allowed to do everything you want with my terrain packages. Even if you start from scratch now, the cloud of suspicion is too big and should you ever complete such terrain and release it, I can have it removed by the admins on the grounds of theft and plagiarism. You're free to work on it for your own pleasure, but rest assured that you no longer can release it here. You acted in complete disregard of rules. Instead of asking me for permission first, you dared to enter a thread and boast about a WIP that at the moment is basically a copy and paste of my hours, days, months of careful researches. Wrench knows how many times I bothered him asking for permission to rework his stuff. To ask for it was the right thing to do, something you didn't do. Basically, you just shot yourself in the foot before even starting. I feel ashamed as I have failed to protect my own work and that of my friends who graciously decided to help. In the end, I am the idiot, the one to blame. I have no more words for this thread. -
Upgrade for ODS...calling modders new and old
Menrva replied to daddyairplanes's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
First of all, I didn't use your rework. I started over from Wrench's original terrain available at the download section. Your "major" rework consisted on adding a few things, and a tileset without proper transition tiles, both things were not used on my rework, so there was no need to credit you for something that's not there. Second, it was you who failed to credit me for the 250m heightmap I gave you for the EAWEuro terrain remake you were doing. Seriously, I do not know what's happening with you, and I am saddened that things have taken this route. Feel free to dislike my post. I do not need likes. I can count on the honesty and friendship of those who know me. -
Upgrade for ODS...calling modders new and old
Menrva replied to daddyairplanes's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
Of all bases that you cited, only Prince Sultan is really needed. The others have been used mostly by transport aircraft and heavy bombers. And I added such bases as OffMap ones anyway, to be used for the AI aircraft. I really “appreciate” that people are trying to diminish my efforts at terrain making. I was expecting a remake of Operation Darius on the 2003+ version of the terrain, but that one is now being made with another terrain. If you people want to work on another terrain for ODS, feel free to do so. What strikes me is that the original ODS terrain was much wrong and inaccurate, and people never cared. I could have placed Prince Sultan AB on a wrong location as in the original, and people would have never noticed. I spent three years, between RL commitments, into making a “small” terrain full of airbases, lakes, rivers, everything being carefully placed and tiled according to satellite imagery. I even added historical FOBs and Iraqi Strongpoints, thanks to the military documents I gathered. But I guess only a few notice such details. It's a pity. Alright, rant is over. Over and out. -
F-5a
Menrva replied to sophocles's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I know this thread is about the F-5A, but I'd also like to know what happened to Centurion's F-5E package. He only released the Early Version package (https://combatace.com/forums/topic/84424-f-5e-early-versions-pack/?tab=comments#comment-678934) so I guess there were other packages planned. I am asking because I have been working on a terrain which could use some Mexican F-5Es. -
I worried when I saw that the site was unreachable. I write to a lot of good folks here so... No apologies needed, Erik! Thank you for getting everything back to normal ASAP. We owe you one!

Terrain Reinstallation Problems
Menrva replied to Sheriff's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Are you sure? Be careful that with Windows 10 some things changed. Your mod folder now should be inside C:\Users\Your Name\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighers2 Vietnam\ In the example it's the StrikeFighters2 Vietnam folder. You could use StrikeFighters2 Israel too; it makes little difference as both games are merged. Custom terrains must be put inside a Terrains folder.
