This is the problem we'll be having with this platform. We'll be expecting it to perform the 3000km penetrating strike role, only, it doesn't have the legs it's predecessor had, so it'll have to carry tanks and require one outgoing and one incoming top up, meaning our tankers will need to be moved forward, meaning it'll need the associated cover, meaning more tankers will be needed, and so on... This isn't the fault of the design, only the thinking behind selecting this over something like the Mudhen that was designed for the task. The irony about that decision (and for this goes for the F-22, not that the MoD here had any serious notions of actually trying to buy it) is that purchasing an advanced model Strike Eagle was rejected here, officially, on grounds of cost (too expensive to purchase and maintain) yet the F-35 we're buying is going to cost (approx) 130% more, per aircraft and about 3 times as much in maintenance and won't be able to perform as originally intended (Stealth or functionality rather than stealth AND functionality). The former Air Vice Marshall, LM lobbyists and the previous government's choice not to go ahead with a tender process (thanks again LM!) really f***ed us on this one. We could counter potential regional threats without pissing money away on platforms like this by having the right tool for the right job, unfortunately, our MoD, Government and RAAF leadership are full of tools, just not the right ones.

I thought the one in 99 was bigger? This was an EF4, that one was a EF5 going by what's being said on the news here. Either way, devastation is still devastation and they got hit hard!

Ooh! Dunno why, but this and the Gannet were so ugly, yet I loved seeing both of them in action. It's prolly got something to do with that rule of something ugly generally being the most functional. -
So I'm getting this on the ticker on my phone: WTF?? Anyone getting anything like this from their news services?? I mean, I know technically they've been in a state of war with each other since 1953, but this is a real escalation, real quick, if true. This is popping up on the ABC News (Australia) site currently.

B 737 awacs
SayethWhaaaa replied to acesfakia's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Yep, that's the one (as well as the AMI tanker). And it was Veltro's, not Dels'. -
I was thinking load shift at the time I was watching it. Two distinct accidents I've seen (one involving a C-2A, another with an An-12) that have really stuck in my memory played out in almost identically... just gut wrenching stuff!

B 737 awacs

If one of those packs is the North Korean Modern Warfare campaign, that's a mod of Del's 767. I know at least the Wedgetail was. I don't recall ever having seen a specific 737 for this series thus far. -

Chaotic scene in Boston area after explosions, gunfire, fatal shooting of MIT officer
SayethWhaaaa replied to Dave's topic in The Pub
One's been tagged, other's still on the loose. Did this have anything to do with MIT or the drive by with grenades? -
Top Gun? You mean that volley ball movie...?

Crap, I never notice the E in AGM-84E. D'oh! -
The standard reaction here is usually "Only a Skyhawk?? That's a Kahu buddy! Don't you ever forget it!"

Feminists aren't really known for being whores though. Quite the opposite in fact... They kinda have issues with the 'whole disempowering of women thing'.

Are you sure? It's CGR in mine... -
I've always heard that wooden bomb tale told as something the Germans did to the British. Weird...

Idea:PLAAF MiG-23ML copy
SayethWhaaaa replied to Erwin_Hans's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum
I learned of the possibility years and years ago that, at one point, the PLAAF/PLAN were looking to purchase the Harrier, sometime back in the 80s. This is a concept that has always intrigued me. -

Absolutely fantastic skin, Sheriff! But I have to say, I'm stoked we were never silly enough to buy this p.o.s. aircraft for our illustrious air force! -
That book has a really bad rep for being very ignorant of and stereotyping the Japanese people, here. When I used to work in libraries, it used to be included on a list of books not to be displayed when we did specific displays for authors, themes, etc because of the feedback patrons used to give us (even if it didn't sell too badly upon release here). I remember reading it and thinking "Wow, what an arrogant pr*ck this guy is! It's like I'm reading a story about a Japan that never lost it's belligerent, nationalist WWII attitude". I even wondered if he'd met any Japanese people at that point, more so when I read it's ridiculous ending. It wasn't until I saw some interviews with him on youtube that I realised that, yeah, he really is just an arrogant pr*ck-- especially in the commentary during of Sum of all Fears.

I've been dying for something like this ever since the servers for Fighter Ace were shutdown around 3 years ago. I've been keeping an eye on it, but my computer just shat itself a few days ago... :(

And the next reverse engineered fighter in China is..........
SayethWhaaaa replied to MigBuster's topic in Military and General Aviation
Are you sure? Russia: No Deal on Sale of Fighter, Subs to China I've been hearing about this in the Asia/Pacific defense news for a few months now, but Russia isn't keen on the idea as it seems China is only purchasing the Su-35s for their engines, at least, according to Russian insiders. Russia's pushing for a sale of 48, China is only agreeing to 24 and the Russians know the Chinese won't honour the deal and will produce unlicensed products. Why would you enter into a deal when you know they'd do this before hand?? And as for Gary Li, a senior analyst at London-based IHS Fairplay, I could do his job after having suffered a major head injury and still be a better analyst. That guy is either down playing it on purpose, or, is more likely... -
Any series similar to Dogfights from the other end of things?
SayethWhaaaa replied to Nesher's topic in Military and General Aviation
Neither was I (not about the aces anyways), but I'd have just liked to see something on the technology from the East from time to time. Also, that docco about the A-4 I mentioned, mentions Israel in the vaguest way. It's something like "The Skyhawk was a success with air forces overseas, including that of Israel..." And that's it. Nothing more than that. Israel's use of Skyhawks was, you know, pretty significant. I think it deserved more that a single throwaway line. These doccos just gloss over all sorts of pertinent information like that unless it pertains directly to the US. Maybe I'm just picky, but I'm not gonna waste an hour with a series if I know I can get better, non recycled footage or info online...
