SF2NA Iceland Classic TFD/HFD terrain
Julhelm replied to gerwin's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Knowledge Base
I made some own custom tiles with IMO nicer snow (based on Starys as well) which I did some heightmaps for. I can upload them here if there's any interest in tinkering with them. -
Why is everybody bugging out from SF series?
Julhelm replied to FLOGGER23's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Let him lock everything at once then, if he's intent on locking it later anyway. As long as the content is local it can be unlocked and tinkered with. -
I had a pair of VHS tapes called In The Cockpit which were great. Here's one that I found:

Merry Christmas from North Pole

Looks cool. Stary should make a tileset for it. -
I don't know if I should buy it or hold out for Silent Hunter Online instead. I didn't enjoy SH4 all that much. SH1 is still the best.

So you want to make a 3d object for Strike Fighters?
Julhelm replied to FastCargo's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Knowledge Base
All you need is an .obj or .fbx exporter. Almost every 3D package can import/export .obj. -

North Dakota Texaco tanker v1.0 for SF2 This is an attempt at making a better-looking target as compared to the stock cargoship. I think this looks better. Be advised this uses normalmapping and is thus incompatible with versions of the game earlier than february 2010. Works fine in DX9 however though you'll not see any per-pixel lighting. Won't work in 1st gen games so don't even bother. Pictars: Installation: Simply extract the contents of the package into your ground objects folder. It'll overwrite your stock cargoship so that, you know, it'll actually show up in missions. Known Issues: Destroyed model absolutely refuses to show up ingame. However I've included the lod file so any enterprising souls can give it a go. Credits: Model & textures by Nils 'Julhelm' Dücker Disclaimer: You MAY NOT use any part of this package in any payware package or otherwise take credit for it without first consulting me. Any problems post on the combatace boards or mail to NilsD <at> bredband <dot> net -
It is Vought's mockup of their F-14 design.

It's still higher resolution than an Xbox360 or Playstation 3. -
Strike Fighters : Android Edition

Looks like overexposure from the screen to me. Besides, didn't he already state they were using middleware (ie: Unity 3D) for the mobile stuff? -
I think thirdwire fans should see this for DCS
Julhelm replied to Stary's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Well to be honest, back then technology was moving at such a rapid pace that the filled polygon graphics of Falcon 3 were obsolete at almost the time it came out. -
Convair Model 201 Shipboard Fighter
Julhelm posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
File Name: Convair Model 201 Shipboard Fighter File Submitter: Julhelm File Submitted: 24 June 2012 File Category: SF2 Series Add On Aircraft Convair Model 201 for Strike Fighters 2 ---------------------------------------------- What this is : This is the CTOL version of Convair's Model 200 VSTOL entry for the Sea Control Ship fighter competition of the early 70's. It also reappeared later as GD Model 218 during the VFAX competition which ultimately ended up as the F-18. There are quite a number of artist's impressions and 3-view floating around, of which most ones show a more pointy delta planform and underwing Sidewinders. That would be the earlier iterations, which by 1975 or so would have evolved into what you see here. The original documentation only mentions 2 AIM-9 + 2 AIM-7 but I added 2 underwing and a centerline station because it makes the plane a bit more fun to use and isn't totally implausible. ---------------------------------------------- More Stuff: It uses sounds from SF2E so your mileage may vary :o ---------------------------------------------- Known Issues: None, really. ---------------------------------------------- Credits: Models & textures & FM by Julhelm As usual, these files may not be used in payware or otherwise tampered with and reposted without my consent which you may request on Combatace forum. This message will self destruct in five seconds. Click here to download this file -

The fun thing with Streakeagle's rant about ARMA becoming a zombie game is that DayZ is much more hardcore simulation than stock ARMA2 ever was and that's exactly why it's so popular. If anything DayZ is proof that hardcore sim done right can be very successful commercially. -
Eurofighter just as good as F-22 if not better !
Julhelm replied to Veltro2k's topic in Military and General Aviation
The Eurofighter is already obsolete. Stealth is such a major gamechanger which is why Russia and China are investing huge sums of money into developing VLO fighters that can fight on equal ground with the F-22. Against T-50 or J-20 Eurocanards will do as well as the Fairey Battle. -
Things that annoy me greatly....
Julhelm replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
He's also changed his businessmodel from selling a moddable final product to the DLC model. I called this already back in 2011 when the DLC store was introduced. It is obvious that DLC is a non-trivial part of his revenue, or he wouldn't keep doing them. Locking down the game forces customers into buying his content since he can now hold a monopoly on visual quality. -

Julhelm replied to Stary's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
I think the current combat sim community as reflected by the DCS and ARMA crowd is an unimaginative one. Just look at how they whined that ARMA3 was going to be set in the future. It sucks because there are so many other avenues of air combat that could be explored but are commercially unviable as the only available platform around is DCS. -

That has nothing to do with 'realism'. It's the same old as with the subsim people talking about 'realism' when they're really talking fidelity and historical accuracy. I don't see how what-if is less realistic if the design is well-documented and well-researched.
