MudWasp48 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 This guy is on a mission to mees up Jasta 2, me specifically. I swear I destroyed him and his nieuport about 3 weeks ago while we were escorting 4 Rolands. Then his whole squad swarmed me like pissed off yellow jackets. They broke off dogfights and tag teamed me to the mud as my wingmen desperately tried to help. Today a scramble mission is what we faced. Guess who comes screaming down to put a few rounds into my trusty albatros just after the engine fires up? Yep, my new bff Albert Ball. Question... Will historical aces regenerate until their actual/historical date of death occurs? Quote
Hellshade Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 That is exactly how it works sir. You can shoot him down, but he won't die in the sim until the historical date of his death. Quote
Olham Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 (edited) Mmuahahahahahaaa!!!! MudWasp, I remember I had a similar time with him while being in Jasta 2. You see, now you got some kind of friend, and you both won't get bored, but can look forward to the next meeting. I shot him down over the lines once, in a fight very low over the mud. But he must have climbed out of the wreckage and entered another S.E.5a. Next day he wanted revenge. Personally I prefer it this way - I would want to see the historical aces as long as they would have been there. You can still note in your pilot book: "Shot down British ace Albert Ball". . Well Olham you gotta understand Ball's position, when your old crap bag canvas covered flying tractor of an SE5-A gets its tail feathers burnt by a superior pilot in a superior Albatros type, the only way to really beat that combo is to shoot-em up on the ground before that invincible pair can even get in the air, just like he did to Mudwasp! That's his only hope really. Mudwasp.....next patrol, drop a pair of old boots with an insult attached on their aerodrome aka-Dawn Patrol style, and get his blood boiling. Olham, good to see you are still "ventilating" these sub-par species of aircraft as well. ; ) All the best, ZZ. Edited May 6, 2013 by zoomzoom Quote
Olham Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I would say, that the S.E.5a was rather superiour to the Albatros - at least in speed and climb. But thanks for regarding me as being superiour to Albert Ball (which I also think is hyperbole). Quote
zoomzoom Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 (edited) "I would say, that the S.E.5a was rather superiour to the Albatros - at least in speed and climb" buzzkill. Whew.....I watched this: and got it back. Edited May 7, 2013 by zoomzoom Quote
Olham Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Here are two of Kermit's "KermiCam" videos from the Albatros cockpit: Quote
Shiloh Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Going back to the original post that's great you took out Albert Ball. I haven't yet had the pleasure of dueling an ace of that caliber. I had a great duel once with Werner Niethammer (6 victories) from Jasta 13 and downed him near the lines. I put some bullets in Franz Buchner (40 victories) in the same fight but he got away. Good stuff! Quote
RAF_Louvert Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 (edited) . No matter how many times I've run across an ace in this sim I still find it a white knuckle experience and am simply glad when I survive the encounter, and I too am glad they hang around until it is historically correct for them to shuffle off this mortal coil, (virtually speaking). . MudWasp48 Posted May 15, 2013 Author Posted May 15, 2013 Oh Man! I tangled with Oswald Boelcke and I'm still skaking! He pounced on the wrong flock of Sopwith Strutters with his squad of EIIIs. I didn't know an EIII could maneuver like that. I finally caught him in a climb and killed the pilot, then destroyed his plane as he flew straight away in a repetive climb drop fashion. It was May 28th noonish time and we were returning from bombing a German airfield. I don't see bombs on my plane when I'm loaded with them. Did that plane have a bomb bay? After I destroyed him, the Rolands he must have been escorting tag teamed me accross the mud line. I got 1 of them, but they crippled my plane. I did manage to glide on to the nearest friendly field which was under bombardment. Landed ok, but the engine is toast. Quote
Olham Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 (edited) Seems the Strutter had bomb bays. I just found this short text in a modeller's forum: "I'll need to check Windsock 80 when I get home but I think the French loaded the bombs vertically. on the underside of the fuselage should be a 4x3 grid. which was then covered in paper. the bombs dropped veritcally through this. The British strutter bombers had 2 sets of bomb bay doors on bungees." Sounds like you were a lucky Blighter today, to escape Boelcke's lot and then Rolands! Edited May 15, 2013 by Olham Quote
MudWasp48 Posted May 16, 2013 Author Posted May 16, 2013 The Rolands concern me more than non-Boelcke EIIIs. I enjoy flying them, Rolands, but no bomb load and endless recon missions bore me. That makes sense about the Sop Strutter. I observed a bomb drop from float view, didn't see any doors open, bombs just fell from the fuselage. Quote
Olham Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 I had some fights against Roland Cl.II, when I was with 24 Sqn RFC, flying DH-2. They gave us all hands full to do to keep up with their high and low fighting. In a DH-2 you can be really proud, when you get one with your single gun. Quote
MudWasp48 Posted May 16, 2013 Author Posted May 16, 2013 (edited) Found the "open bomb bay" command and assigned a joystick button for it even though it isn't needed to drop bombs. Looks well modeled when observing from float view. Edited May 16, 2013 by MudWasp48 Quote

Olham Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Mmuahahahahaaa!!! Yeah, I know what you mean - I was very happy each time I survived a tight turn in her, and my admiration for Major Hawker's flying skills grew hugely! Quote
MudWasp48 Posted May 20, 2013 Author Posted May 20, 2013 Those crazy pusher planes. I haven't tried a DH2 campaign. I do like the Feb2, it's just so odd, with the pack of smokes sliding along the cockpit shelf. It can be tore up later in the war easily, but if ya know how to fly it so the gunner does his job, it's fair. Just strange flying with no forward gunsight Quote
Olham Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 In the DH-2 you have the best possible forward gun sight - that's why they built it as a pusher, I assume. At that time they were not able to fire through the prop. When you take some time for learning, she is an interesting lady. Only when I had to fight her I realised how well she could be flown - amd how bad I had piloted her. Major Hawker could have shown you a graceful dance! Quote
MudWasp48 Posted May 21, 2013 Author Posted May 21, 2013 I like flying the Feb2, just staying inside the gunners arc of fire, but it is odd not hitting a gunsight and firing. That guy has two guns he can fire! He pretty good at smacking them home when I dive under a fighter. I'll have to try out the Dh-2 in the future. No rush, I'll take my time enjoying all this SIM has to offer. Can't remember where I read it, one of the tips threads, but I'm off to listen to the voices of the men that flew Roll the credits.....!!!! Quote
Olham Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I think F6 is the gunsight. Not sure though, if you get it in the "Fee". Quote
