mawhonic Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Hi. This is my first time posting on this forum. I love this site, with aircraft addons and new weather effects, it's made WOE a hundred times better! I say THank You, modders who take the time to create all these terrific addons. But I post this message in regards to, well, exactly what the topic title states. Is there a way to take off from an aircraft carrier, say using the A-6 or the F-14, from the Single Mission option? Sure, I can fly naval aircraft and takeoff from Airforce bases but I want to take off from a carrier. And before you ask, I own WOE and WOV, so the carrier is available. I can take off from it in the Campaign mode, but is it possible in Single Mission? Alright, that's it. Thanks for any advice. Quote
+Fubar512 Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Only if you create a scripted mission. There's no provision at present for a carrier launch or recovery in a randomly-generated mission. Quote
hhf Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Hi! I asked the same question to myself and looked for a solution for WoE in the forums before. I did it this way: - I downloaded the libya terrain and installed it. I copied the GermanyCE.cat from germany terrain into libya folder and renamed it to libya.cat, so the terrain should work - I downloaded the CVN-59 Forrestal ground object package, which includes actually 4 carriers of the forrestal class. - I downloaded the mission package "Tomcats over Libya" which includes carrier based missions - Then some fine tuning was needed. So did the forrestal file- and directory names didn't match. This is always a point You must check. The objects included in missions will not appear in the game if the references don't fit. Mostly the directory and ini name of the referenced objects don't match and must be renamed. But check this out for Yourself. These are smaller problems everyone must solve for himself. If the carrier's not in the game Your aircraft will fall simply in the water at the beginning. - last but not least: You can takeoff from carriers, but for me landings were impossible, because the gear brakes away at launch, because the takeoff speed is too high. First I was wondering, if I could do anything like less throttle to avoid it, but the real problem is, that the F-14 configuration says, that the gear max speed ist about 130m/s. It sounds strange when I checked, that the F-15 for example has an max speed value of about 170 m/s. A carrier based aircraft's gear is more instable than the gear of an land based aircraft? I think this is an misconfiguration and corrected the max speed value to 170 m/s. I don't know if this is realistic, but at least, now I can land on carriers too. - If You start one of the missions You can even choose any other available aircraft than the F-14 for You So, good luck ! Are you serious? The speed you've mentioned is the maximum speed at which the gear can be deployed, that is, lowered for landing, and has nothing to do with the gear's durability. In fact, the max deploy speed on the model in my install is 128.61 m/s. What determines the gear's durability is the "MaxLoadFactor" value, which is set rather high for the F-14 at 7.0-8.0 Gs, in deference to its mission profile (carrier-based A/C). Since I regularly "fly" the Tomcat model, and more often than not, manage to successfully trap aboard after a mission, I'd say that you might have a problem somewhere in your install. Quote

Czech6 Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 If you don't want to script a mission from scratch, you could go into the Missions directory and change the aircraft type in one of the existing scripted missions. Quote
ezlead Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 hhf: Your gear are breaking off because of cat launch speeds. Go to Forrestal or whatever carrier you are using file in Ground Objects folder, open carrier data.ini file with wordpad or notepad, scroll down to [Cat1],[Cat2],etc. Find LaunchTime=, This can be adjusted up or down for cat launch speeds. You want your aircraft to be at about 150 to 170 kts off the cat. I start with LaunchTime=3.0 and adjust up or down from there. You have to change the LaunchTime for each cat to make them the same. I had one carrier that gave me 400 kts off of the cat, naturally gear broke off. Hope this helps for launch problem. Quote
Wannabewalt Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 Thanks for the tips. Just had to change folder name CV59 to CV-59 & it works great. It's the only way a F-14 should take off, 0 - 150 mph in 3 seconds!!! Quote
Guest IndioBlack Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 concur, I've got almost as many launches and traps in the sim as I do for real. I've also downloaded the Tomcats over Libya mission pack and gone through them. Very well done, a good set of missions and I've adapted a few of them for other time periods and aircraft. Good building block. But the key is that for individual missions, you have to build them yourself. Well, I'm delighted that my TOMCATS OVER LIBYA is appreciated. I was hoping they would serve as a template, and that I'd see a whole slew of new missions made by other users. You can modify them as you wish, folks, just post them so I can fly something new too. Let's get some more Tomcat missions, and then I can "steal" something back. It's interesting that they brought back memories for you, I think that's to do with the terrain, the carrier, the Tomcat and you. I doubt that I added anything too realistic there : The missions were not meant to be historical events, just something to capture the flavour of the times. I always think that's the safest way to go. You may have noticed in another thread that I had some Woes trying to use the Phoenix in WOE. Fortunately that's sorted now, so I'm intending to make some new missions using the default CV63 off the coast of Holland. I've also adapted the Libya missions for flying in WOE, using the CV63, and will drop them in the same package. Like you, it's a matter of finding the time. Quote

+Typhoid Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Is that the New Jersey back there? it is. On a later tour when I was on the 6th Fleet Staff, we rode the Iowa for a few months as our flagship. I still have a piece of the teak deck with a plaque on it from that tour. You haven't lived until you stand on the bridge during a 16" gun shoot!!! Real Artillery is 16" Quote

+Typhoid Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Reminds me of that scene in Under Siege when Tommy Lee Jones goes flying backwards when it fires. I didn't happen to see that. But the reality is very much like that. On the flag bridge one time in preparation for a 16" shoot we were supposed to close the armored hatch and drop the glass windows. They forgot one time to close the armored hatch. There was a convenience door, standard wood, that came off the hinges with the muzzle blast - crossed the watch center over the two watch officers desks - and splintered into a thousand fragments on the other side of the compartment.........
