OK....this may be a stupid question....but here goes.

 

Was the F-105 a part of the Century Series of aircraft, or was it just a coincidence that it had a designation in that same range....

 

I mean...the thing was so ugly and all the others in the century series were so sleek looking....just doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the aircraft in the series.

What the Century series has in common is that they all were supersonic fighter aircraft designed and put into service in the 1950s. And at that time their capablities represented basically a quantum leap compared to the planes the USAF had used just a few years earlier. That would be my explanation.

 

Also, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. :wink:

Wait, are we talking about the Thunderchief or the Avro Arrow?

 

EDIT: Stupid, stupid. Obviously not the Arrow, as it is possibly one of the coolest-looking planes ever.

F-105 was part of the Century series indeed. Ugly though? Not hardly, that was a sleek and fast bird. Nothing could catch it at full burners and its payload was incredible. It was the workhorse of the USAF in the early part of Vietnam.

Yep. The F-108 was an interceptor design, similar to the British TSR-2 and the Canadian Arrow, but it never went beyond the mockup stage.

XF-103 - Proposed Republic Mach 3+ interceptor

F-104 Starfighter

F-105 Thunderchief

F-106 Delta Dart

F-107 Ultra Sabre (the funny looking intake)

XF-108 Rapier - Proposed Long Range Interceptor with 2 XB-70 engines...looked similar to CF-105 Avro Arrow with F-15 intakes

XF-109 - Proposed supersonic VTOL fighter with 8 (!!) engines built by Bell

F-110 - Original designation of what became the F-4

So, technically...F-100 through F-106 were part of the Century Series.

 

as those were the only aircraft to actually receive proper operational designations

Not really a stupid question. AI was my desk job in the Navy. The Lead sled was the F-84 Thunderflash / Thunderstreak. The F-105 Thunderchief was the Thud.

 

 

Sled in foreground. Thud in background.

 

This is an F-84 dunderstreak, I mean thunderstreak.

 

 

This is the F-105 Thunderchief or thud.

 

 

Any questions? How about green knight, green pawn, and shamrock skins for SPADs?

The F-111 doesn't count?
