Operation Tainted Cigar bright water color...

Recommended Posts

Just wondering, is there any way to get the water in OTC to not be quite so bright at night?

Thanks!

Recoloring the tiles yourself is the only thing I can think of. First I heard of it being an issue.

Not really a big issue. Just something that I noticed when I got an escort mission at night. I don't know if it's realistic, but it does look kinda cool.

Thanks for your help, and also for the awesome campaign!

Odd, they looked fine to me...did you recently change a video driver or some other tweaking?

I was thinking the same thing, maybe a brightness issue.

No. I haven't changed anything. But all the OTC screenshots I've seen posted by others (like the ones from the AAR at SimHQ that I linked in my first post) all look like that, so I assumed the problem wasn't just with me. My water at night in WOV is dark just a one would expect it.

I flew a single mission, and the water was not as bright as in the screenshots. The moon was even rising, and the water still did not get that bright.

I'm using a GeForce 7600GT, btw.

Alright. I guess I'll play around with it more and see how much and when exactly it happens. I'm using a laptop with an integrated graphics card, and water set on medium, so there are probably some differences between what I see and what most others see. Maybe that all has something to do with it.

If I ever figure it out, I'll post it.

Thanks for all the help!

Could be the water setting also. I think that the water effects require the setting to be on High.

Of course, that might not have anything to do with the color.

I flew a daytime mission, and the water still wasn't as bright as the screenshots. Definitely lighter, and more tropical, but not likr the screens.

It does not look like that for me.

I run with the water setting on HIGH. Do you have yours on something other than HIGH?

Yup. I'm on medium. I did try a mission with water settings on high earlier to see if my 'ole Inspiron 2200 could handle it, but it was prior to this discussion, so I ran it during the day. The result was that it was not really playable. I'll try it again at night to see if it fixes the bright problem, but since I can't handle high settings, I'll just have to live with medium anyway...

Thanks everyone.

Those pics are definately not normal Malibu.

I fly over the area on a daily basis, sometimes to Havana, but usually to the Bahamas and I'm very impressed with how well the OTC team created the terrain. It really has a genuine tropical shallow water feel! The team really captured a good representation of the look of the area. :good:

Well, when was the last time you updated your video drivers? If you have not changed them in a while, it may help.

I do that funky thing they tell you not to do, whereas I sometimes do not delete the old drivers...have done the remove everything, install freshest driver and had odd things happen...re-install old drivers with new ones on top and things panned out better (may have to do with the mix of ancient programs and new that I like to use, maybe imagination).

It shouldnt work, but so far it does for me...one really has to just tweak stuff until it bends into submission

Ok. So it only happens for me on medium graphics with the water in OTC. If I switch to either low or high it doesn't happen. It also doesn't happen at all in WOV or WOE (even on medium). I heard somewhere there was a water effect that was added in OTC. Is that true? Maybe that's why it only happens in OTC... I don't think I have every updated the driver for my card. I don't even know if I can, since it's just an integrated card. I'll look into it. But for now, I'll just stick with medium, and if I know I'm doing something at night, I'll change the detail back to low.

While I all your attention, I have one more question. The layer of clouds in inclement weather in OTC is different than the one in WOV/WOE. I have the skymod installed in WOV/WOE, and it looks like it uses the same tiles as OTC. How do I get the better cloud layer from OTC into the other parts of the series?

OTC:

WOV:

Anyone know?

Thanks!

Ok. So, I was able to update my graphics driver. It didn't fix the bright water on medium, but I was able to get better frame rates (or at least playable ~10 fps) with high water settings. So that settles that for now.

Also, I found the cloudlayer.bmp's in the OTC flight folder and coppied them to my other install. Thant's all it took :)

Thank you both for your help!
