Atreides Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Remember seeing this somewhere, I belive that wreckage is in China, on recon from Taiwan, right ? Quote
Lexx_Luthor Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Woa, supersonic topic there Jug. Dedicated website on this ~> http://www.spyflight.co.uk/main.htm Shot down planes is the nature of the spyplane business. Some of the most amazing history is still hidden high above the cirrus in the Siberian sky. It seems Soviet air defence squadrons were, in general, not very aggressive, in some cases very timid, and I am partially reminded of the unchallenged pre-invasion Luftwaffe recon flights. After the June 1941 invasion, ramming with attempted bailout -- not "kamikazi" -- using older aircraft became a common tactic that cost irreplacable Luftwaffe bomber and recon crews. One of the most interesting I stumbled over is: They couldn't wait for U-2 so, before TK/Thudwire added...er...before North American added air refueling to F-100, they made a half dozen unarmed RF-100A with four drop tanks for afterburning photodash over USSR. RF-100A ~> http://www.spyflight.co.uk/f100.htm Pretty smooth. Quote
JediMaster Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 There's gun camera shots of that C-130 shot down over the Caucasus somewhere I believe... Quote
GreyCap Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I have much respect for you guys Jug. Just finished reading Operation Overflight by Gary Powers. Facinating stuff to say the least. Quote
Lexx_Luthor Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Over at capun's place, TheEditor poasted this video of cancelled super-recon Republic R-12 for me. Fuzzy, but probably rare video. Scary flypast with what seems like a lot of yaw, or so I kinda guess. Very hot design probably. Video starts after a few still photos ~> http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=US&v=eeu04VaxssU Intro article on R-12 ~> http://www.spyflight.co.uk/Rainbow.htm Quote
