Emp_Palpatine Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 So... I've borrowed my mother computer as mine died. It's powerfull enough to run the Gen2 sims, so I was pondering wether to buy some of them or not. Then came the Christmas Combo pack! The problem is: it will install the games in a merged install. I've never done this before, so I would like to know wether it is a good idea or not. More precisely, how will this pose a problem to a guy used to play modded games, especially Nato Fighters and such convertions like ODS or OTC? Will I be able to play them or not? So, should I buy the combo or only select the games I do prefer? Quote
+hgbn Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 If you want have the games modded. I would choose the seperate games. I would recomend SF2E (NF4+) and SF2V ( Malibu and eburgers exspansion pack) if you dont want them all. Quote
Emp_Palpatine Posted December 23, 2009 Author Posted December 23, 2009 Well, I would love to have them all... But that merged install thing does pose a serious problem. I want indeed my games modded. Quote
+hgbn Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 The main problem regarding modding is SF2I and the lastest patches for the rest. You can merge SF2+SF2V+SF2E use the June09B patch and mod without any problems. Quote
+Dave Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 And that is what I have done, I have Jun 09 for the SF2/V/E. SF2I is fully patched to the latest standards on its own install. I have no desire to go back and hash a bunch of stuff I just updated. Not going to do it, wouldn't be prudent. Quote
Emp_Palpatine Posted December 23, 2009 Author Posted December 23, 2009 AFAIK, the combo as well as the separated games are sold patched. So, december update will be in whatever my choice is. I've read the topic about the said patch... I guess it will rise serious issues with NF and Vietnam mod (forgot the name, just saw it download section), wouldn't it? Quote
+Fubar512 Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 There are really no drawbacks to a merged game, as long as you're willing to edit everything to work properly. Every terrain can have its own individual environment, limited nations, groundobjects, etc. Quote
Emp_Palpatine Posted December 23, 2009 Author Posted December 23, 2009 That's the trick. I usually lack the time and especially the abilities to edit things like that, save it's very light edits. That's also why I appreciate so much you modders works... I guess I will have to take separate games... Quote

I can relate to that....it can be a real headache to update everything to work with every new patch, even for an experienced modder. Quote
+hgbn Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 But if I were you I would ask TK if SF2 SF2V and SF2E are patched up to december patch level out of the box. If they are then go for the Combo pack. Quote
Emp_Palpatine Posted December 23, 2009 Author Posted December 23, 2009 Well, it was what I understood reading his post on Thirdwire boards. But nothing replaces indeed a clear answer. I'll ask him. If they are patched, why should I go to the combo pack? I won't be able to use mod IIRC. Quote
+hgbn Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Just a hunch. Maybe new mods are going to be made for the december patch. It will only make sense Quote
Saint19 Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Hi, I purchased the combo pack recently. It is indeed patched to the Dec. 2009 update. I've also installed the NF4+ mod, which seems to be working fine. But again I'm new to all this. Hope this helps a little. Quote
Emp_Palpatine Posted December 23, 2009 Author Posted December 23, 2009 TK just confirmed me the Combo and separate games as well are all december patched. Looks like I'm scr...d. Quote
jomni Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 (edited) Combo pack is the way to go. ODS and OTC not compatible with SF2 series at the moment. I suppose these will be up to December standards. Only problem is if you like NF4+. It will mostly work but you will find some little things that needs tweaking. The Vietnam mod is generally ok with Dec patch I think. Edited December 24, 2009 by jomni Quote
Emp_Palpatine Posted December 24, 2009 Author Posted December 24, 2009 Yeah, I love NF! That's my main problem. Any idea of the needed tweaking? I'm also afraid for the future: if these total conversions ODS and OTC are to be one day released for Gen2, they probably won't like merged install, will they? Just like other mods like NF. I'm considering whether bying only three of the games (and put 10$ more, but frankly it's TK, it does not bother me that much) rather than the pack, just to be sure I am able to play such mods when and if they are released. +hgbn Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 You wont have problems with a merged install. I have NF4+ and the exspanaions pack for SF2V installed in a merged install of SF2+SF2V and SF2E without any problems. I use the individual exe for each game to create a mod folder for each mod Quote

Why shouldn't they? In SF2 series, every terrain can have it's own unique environment, nations, and object skins. For example, in the SF2 ODS_terrain.ini in a combined install, you'd add these lines to control which nations and aircraft you'd encounter: EnvironmentFile=ODS_Environment.ini LimitedNations=TRUE GroundObjectTexture=Sand That's just one example of the advantages SF2 has over SF1. Emp_Palpatine Posted December 24, 2009 Author Posted December 24, 2009 Really guys? Thanks. So my only issue is december patch? No problems at all with a merged game with future/current mods? Eventually, I would be able to play, say, NF5+ in my merged game without issues? Quote

My only problem is my framerate dropped a little bit with the NF+ mod...I guess because of the terrain? Quote
Emp_Palpatine Posted December 24, 2009 Author Posted December 24, 2009 All right, thanks a lot for advices and help you guys. I'll take my decision tonight or tomorrow, but I'm now almost sure it will be combo pack. Quote
Emp_Palpatine Posted December 25, 2009 Author Posted December 25, 2009 Buying the combo pack as I type! Thanks for your advices, I hope I wont come across too much issues when future mods are released. Quote
+hgbn Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 Great, Welcome aboard the second generation series... Quote
