Upgrading--but on a budge

Recommended Posts

I'm in the mood to upgrade--but on a budget. Right now I have an athlon 64 3200+ 2MB ram, windows xp sp3, 256mb 7950GT video, audigy2 etc.

Thinking about putting this combo together:http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.359138

and putting 7950GT and audigy2 into it. Athlon II x2 245 regor should be a considerable improvement over 3200+ (2.9ghz vs 2.0ghz); dual core useful for other things down the line, plus I can always upgrade cpu later. Am I on the right track?

Not bad, i dont belive you would need to upgrade your cpu after that one rather focus on getting a new graphics card afterwards.

I agree with xclusive, you should be fine with those specs.

I got the 250 last year. Upgraded from Semperon and 2G ram. Decided to go AM3 lifestyle all the way.

Man its very much faster in every way. But your A64 is a step up from my old Semperon so you may not see as much increase as I saw. Since processors development has staganated, you could get away with waiting.

When you do upgrade, go at least 4Gb ram minimum. You'll need it all. I do. The dual processor actually seems to help with old apps. Win-7 may be running on one core, the app on another. That's my guess anyways.

Agreed, my specs aren't topnotch, and it runs quite fine. SF2 sometimes runs better than SF1..
