Olham 164 Posted March 29, 2010 Warplane - Rotary Engine Centrifugal Force A great demonstration of rotatry engine torque here:
Von Paulus 8 Posted March 29, 2010 Nice video Olham.
Olham 164 Posted March 29, 2010 It was shown here before some time ago, but may still be new for many of us.
Slartibartfast 153 Posted March 29, 2010 Its new to me and its a very good video at explaining the Rotary and its issues... I understand inline engines V-twin etc Engines but never understood how a Rotary was different in the control of an Airplane... Dont get many Rotary engines on Motorbikes
Olham 164 Posted March 29, 2010 Well, these early aircraft rotaries do really rotate themselves around the propellor axis. That is not the same as later radial engines. And when the whole engine rotates, you get a lot of centrifugal force! See this video from "The Vintage Aviator" of a running Oberursel rotary. http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/motion-pictures
UnknownPilot 33 Posted March 29, 2010 New for me (the video), thanks for posting it. :)
Duce Lewis 3 Posted March 30, 2010 Rotaries were deadly to the novice But in the hands of an expert they were lethal weapons Seat of your pants flying at the most extreme Trick was gaining that expertise before it killed you
Barkhorn1x 14 Posted March 30, 2010 Informative vids - thanks Olham. I remember going to Old Rheinbeck Aerodrome in NY when I was 9 years old and seeing them start these old engines - and I was hooked on WWI a/c from then on. Good times.

Everyone should have a Rhinebeck within reasonable driving distance Many a fun day spent there A museum where the artifacts come to life

Check Six 2 Posted March 30, 2010 Its new to me and its a very good video at explaining the Rotary and its issues... I understand inline engines V-twin etc Engines but never understood how a Rotary was different in the control of an Airplane... Dont get many Rotary engines on Motorbikes You can feel a great difference in the gyroscopic effect when riding a motorcycle with the usual chain drive and one that utilises a shaft drive. Very hairy if you're not prepared for it.
