As to whether or not it actually vectors its escorts after you (which share network entries with the Mainstay), is open for debate. I did find, however, that if the escorts go off on their own, questing ahead of the Mainstay, they'll come running back if you try to attack it.

The mainstay's primary role is set to "AWACS", to ensure tha it doesn't show up as a bomber or a transport.

I've defined the A-50's primary role as such to prevent it from showing in other roles, that is, in secondary roles, which I've added in order to get it's Vega-M radar to work in a somewhat believable fashion.
