OT: What else are you playing right now besides OFF?

I can't match all you bods.

 

I constantly recycle my existing collection, hence in the moments when I'm not OFFing or trying to learn Java, I'll relax with either the Battleground series (Napoleonic and ACW), John Tiller's own excellent Napoleonic series covering 1809, or Talonsoft games, which, I would say are without doubt consummate games. I always wanted Squad Leader as a youth, but couldn't afford it, so Eastern Front, Western Front and Rising Sun plugged that gap very nicely.

 

As an old fart, I occasionally have to foray even further back in time, and I have the CPC6128 emulator on my PC which allows me to enjoy, if that's the word, Tau Ceti, Lords of Midnight and other blasts from my student days. All jolly good fun, and a world - literally - away from getting regularly filled in by Hun scouts and Archie.

Ahh, an Amstrad owner. I played both titles on my beloved Speccy, which I still own. Do you know that there's a squad leader verison in PC? Well they say that the only thing that resemblance with the original from Avalon Hill is the title.

Welp, finished Crysis 2 I did. Spent the last 8 days on it, Supersoldier difficulty, took about 12 hours total.

 

I'd give it a 4/4 if I had to rate it. Fantastic, loved the story and action and soundtrack. Certainly one of the best first-person shooters I've played in a long time. Recommended! I'd like to try it again this summer on my new PC after the Dx11 patch is released.

 

And now that that little interlude is over, back to the Royal Flying Corps. Too bad these chaps didn't have XBoxes and Playstations in 1917.

I've just picked up IL2 Cliffs of Dover and while there is a mod to make it somewhat playable, it still needs to be fixed. In the meantime, I'm playing some IL2 1946 and starting to play with the IL2 1956 Jet Era mod. Looking good so far...

Just download Javito and try. It's a wargame with an easy interface, but it takes sometime to master. You can play it without reading instructions.

For many it's stil one of the best ever wargame. Slitherine is producing Panzer Corps which is based in Panzer General. One of the authors is the one who created Panzer General Forever. So yes, give it a try.

Real Golf outdoors. I don't like beimg indoors sitting at the computer when the weather starts to get a little better. Flying Off amd ROF is lots of fun but not very good exercise.

In old times I had much more fun with games. And today buying a game is like gambling:

a) Your PC cannot run it, slideshow gaming

b) Painful installation progresses

c) Overkilled details and too many useless effects

d) Online gaming is alone a Camel-Fight. 10 years old kids are cheating and writing "noob" and something...

 

End effect: Finding an enjoyable game/simulation like OFF: BHaH is like discovering a diamond in a deep jungle.

OFP was probably the best game I've ever played.

Well after a bit of research and a few favourable mentions on this forum from time to time (including this thread), I've installed Silent Hunter 4 (came with the 1.5 patched U-Boat add-on) and like the look of the Operation Monsun mega mod.

But Man, this is one complex sim! I've found my way onto the 'subsim' forums in the hope that they might in some way replicate the friendly and helpful character of this forum.

If anyone here has any other suggestions for a wannabe sub commander struggling to get to grips with SH4, I'd be most grateful!

Ok lately I've come up with a new soul tree build for a Mage class in the new MMO, Rift. Elementalist / Pyromancer / Archon and it is just awesome!!!

 

This won't make much sense to all the non-MMOers here, but I can easily solo an Elite mob (monsters) my level...and can actually solo 2 Elite mobs if I'm careful with my spell rotation. I'm only 34th level (out of 50 max) and have no epic gear yet, so it's pure class combo dynamics and a careful spell rotation that makes it happen. I've got a video of me roasting (literally) a level 34 Elite mob from a Life Rift. It looks so easy that you'd think it was nothing, but Elite mobs are designed to be taken on by at least 3, preferrably 5 players.

 

Elementalist / Pyromancer / Archon (1:14) 1080HD

 

I quit World of Warcraft a few months ago because I got sick of how bad they were nerfing classes and ruining the gameplay. Rift has been a fabulous replacement, giving me far more options that WoW could ever imagine. If you like fantasy MMOs at all, I highly recommend trying Rift.

I have a version of Silent Hunter 3 on my rig which I've played a few missions with. There is an excellent mod for this game at www.thegreywolves.com but I think they disbanded before they completed the mod for SH4. This sim was overwhelming when I first played but once you start cruising the world's oceans you start to pick up on things. I wish I could help more but I started playing right before I sold my house, then was uprooted for a while then never got back into it.

 

It can be really hard and when the enemy locates you, it can lead to some heart-pounding minutes as they pass right over you in sometimes only 20 feet of water and miss your sub by inches - it's a true cat and mouse game.

Sure thing TaillyHo. I would definitely use the fast-forward feature when leaving your base and when trying to get into enemy waters. You can imagine how long it takes a sub to go a long-distance in real-time. Happy hunting.

SH 3 Rocks and oh yes use the time advance to get to the hunting ground. SH3 was kinda like OFF as to be campaign driven and unpredictable. For example, I was on the surface at night and checking the map when a large Cargo Ship rammed and sunk me. another time I was in between the convoy lines and was too close to use torpedo's came around to launch and had an Escort shell the boat. Be advised that U can run out of fuel so check with the boats Chief often. SH4 I couldn't really get into because u had a set of missions to follow and a lot of bugs Good Hunting Tailly ho.

Thanks Carrick. From what I've read the original buggy SH4 (2007) has been 'patched-up' and well and truly re-worked with some BIG mods (Trigger Maru for US; Op Monsun for U-boats) as well as environment and graphics updates. Maybe you should patch it up and have another try with SH4 (!?) - it certainly is a completely different 'world' to OFF!

 

I haven't ventured beyond 'sub-school' so far . . . there are just sooo many menus and control/command inputs to make sense of. I can do some basic navigation for my 'boat' now, but plotting courses for potential targets - let alone firing solutions!

 

I keep exiting and booting up OFF for the simple life of a WWI pilot!

Before I learned about OFF and P3, I used to play SH3 frequently. In fact, I started modding in SH3 by helping with the RealWeatherFix and developing my SinkingShipFix mod. However, after I installed P3 I don't think I've been back to SH3 since! It's still installed on my computer, however, so I may as yet give it another go.

I've been an avid Flashpoint fan since 2001. I own ARMA 2 through Steam, don't have it installed right now though, but I'll put it on whenever the next big mod is released. I used to have so much fun with Liberation and FDFMod in OFP days.

I have added RC Desk Pilot to my laptop's list of sims since I'm primarily an R/C model pilot and my interest in sim modding came from the venerable RC sim Flying Model Simulator. I sometimes fly OFF with my 6 channel Esky USB transmitter interface, 'cause I'm more used to using an RC transmitter interface instead of a twisty stick.

 

The nice thing about RC Deskpilot is the neat little aircraft importer cum FM creator.

 

 

Here's a model I recently imported to RCDP .. It's an old FMS model from years back that I updated the cockpit and cleaned up some of the meshes on recently.
