After the entering of service of the Apache Block III, the AH-64D Longbow Apache got more and more replaced. Several hundred of AH-64D were to be sold to another country or scrapped. Spain wanted to acquire some of the Longbows in order to add some firepower to the spanish fleet, especially to the aircraft carrier "Principe de Asturias" and the new amphibian attack ship, the L61 "Juan Carlos I". Two full squadrons wer purchased. One, the newly founded 7th Attack Squadron, was stationed on the Juan Carlos I while the second was stationed on the Principe de Asturias replacing a squadron of Seahawks.
