UK_Widowmaker 571 Posted December 3, 2012 Salmon....mmmmmm......Smoked over a peat fire.......mmmmmm! I'm drooling! Now all we need is an Islay Single Malt....May I suggest Lagavulin??? Sadly, I dislike Salmon and Whiskey Sir..... But I will join you with Steak and Ale!
Olham 164 Posted December 3, 2012 Wild Salmon freshly caught and smoked with good woods can be very delicious. But don't give me those fish farm ones. A single malt - ah, the memories...
JimAttrill 24 Posted December 6, 2012 Hey, FastCargo, does your comment mean you actually pay real money for a M$soft operating system. I have loaded everything from Dos 1.0 to W7 Ultimate for free. I might even try W8 if it is offered. But I don't think so as I hate touch screens and smartphones.
corsaire31 7 Posted December 6, 2012 Still running XP Pro on my gaming machine and everything running fine. One thing I learned in 30 years with computers is " If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." Support goes until 2014. However should I need a new machine, guess I would go for Windows 7 which runs on my laptop. Experience has taught me to wait and see with new operating systems, This is how I avoided Millenium and Vista !
JimAttrill 24 Posted December 7, 2012 Could someone please explain the use of the word 'deprecates' in this thread. It makes no sense to me.
+Lothar of the Hill People 6 Posted December 7, 2012 In the process of authoring computer software, its standards or documentation, or other technical standards, deprecation is a status applied to features, characteristics, or practices to indicate that they should be avoided, typically because they have been superseded. JimAttrill 24 Posted December 10, 2012 Which only goes to prove you shouldn't believe everything you read in Wikipedia. It looks like a neologism and illiteratism that I will avoid, even though I have been a computer professional for 30 years now. When my dictionary shows that meaning I might use the word with that meaning. At the moment it does not. +Lothar of the Hill People 6 Posted December 10, 2012 Haha Jim, aren't all computer terms neologisms? Some dictionaries have the the definition in this context, some don't. 3. Computer Science To mark (a component of a software standard) as obsolete to warn against its use in the future so that it may be phased out.
JimAttrill 24 Posted December 10, 2012 Ah, but that's an online dictionary and I only believe in paper dictionaries Why else do you think that I am flying around in a BE2c getting shot down all the time when I could be in an F-15? Most computer science terms are illiteratisms - I like that word! I have had numerous fights on this subject with colleagues. But just to annoy everyone I refer to data in the plural
+Lothar of the Hill People 6 Posted December 10, 2012 Haha this sure beats arguing about operating systems. But unfortunately I lost my paper dictionary in the divorce... Like life, the linguistics discussion seems to have moved onto fresh 'muff'.
