Unluckily, half the crew were killed in the collision, the rest are in hospital. It's a good thing that there were no passengers, the police car ran over some seats that would've had people in them. I've seen many videos from the police cars in Russia, they see some crazy stuff! There probably wouldn't been any fatalities, were the area beyond the runway clear. The plane rammed into the wall of earth the road was laid on, and the nose broke off. Toryu 156 Posted December 30, 2012 (edited) There's talk about a faulty WOW (Weight On Wheels) switch on the Tu-204s. The very same airline has had three runway-excursions within a couple of weeks on the Tu-204: 1) http://www.avherald....99785&opt=0 2) http://www.avherald....d34b5&opt=0 3) http://www.avherald....4b3cb&opt=0 If the WOW-switch doesn't trigger, there are three things that won't happen: - ground-spoiler deployment - autobrakes - reverser-deploymemt Without those devices, combined with a low-GW landing (airplane tends to float) and coupled with a downward-sloping/ possibly iced RWY, any landing will go south pretty quickly. We can not, unfortunately, do anything against these sites and constructions which are accepted and signed by the politics. Now airports are confronted to residents who complain again aircraft noise... while the airport was there long before them ! But you can't blame the structure way past the runway for a crash that shouldn't have happened in the first place: At low GW (this was a ferry-flight, with crew only), even airliners can be stopped within less than 1000m. The RWY at Vnukovo is more than 3000m long (minus the 300m between threshhold and touchdown-zone) - leaving roughly 2700m of stopping-distance after a touchdown "right on spot". There would have been ample space for landing and stopping. Crashes don't happen because of things "popping up" in the way, but by running into them. There should be some consideration of installing arresting-gear at the end of runways (everywhere!), increasing survival-rates. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
