Open Ocean Carrier Battle Map


This terrain is Starys Water-Only terrain, adjusted to be a Carrier duelling ground. It has two Carrier Stations and a few

waypoints, as well as movement data to attack Convoys. There is no interference by ground based aircraft whatsoever, both Carriers

has to rely on what they have available on their decks and is thus perfect for single missions. The Terrain can however also

be used for Sea-Based Campaigns.

 

Installation:

Simply unzip into the Mod Folder of your choice.

 

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

This Terrain requires Strike Fighters 2: North Atlantic

 

This Terrain may require some management of your Ground Objects. The key to this Terrain is the Ocean_NATIONS.INI. This needs to be adjusted to create the scenario you wish.

As of right now, it is set to USN vs Soviet. It is imperative that you choose a year where both nations have a Carrier; regardless of the nations chosen. Do note that

it does not have to be a Red vs Blue Scenario. Brazilian Navy vs Indian Navy, Indian Navy vs US Navy, Soviet Navy vs Brazilian Navy and onwards are all fun combinations

in their own way. Not to mention the classic "Argentine Navy vs Royal Navy" ;-)

 

To spawn a Carrier Group, there needs to be a Carrier and Escorts. Make sure the Carrier can house the intended aircraft!

 

Troubleshooting:

There are a few issues that may arise with this terrain, and all of them are based on your Ground Objects:

 

My Nations/Enemy Carrier is not spawning:

Check that you added the correct nation in the Nations.ini

Check that the Carrier can carry the size of your aircraft (Some carriers can only house "Small" Aircraft and will not spawn if you chosen a "Medium" aircraft)

Make sure the Carrier has a Name List.

 

My Carrier has no Escorts:

Make sure you have nation-appropriate Escorts. Escorts are ships designated as Crusiers, Destroyers and Frigates. This is done in the vessels Data file (WarshipClass=FRIGATE)

For some nations, you can download Escorts but for others, you need to edit them for the nation you wish to use.

Recommend you look in the Add-On Ships Section for anything else you may need. Paulopanz has also uploaded several Airplane + Carrier Packages that are worth checking out.

Ummm, maybe I am doing something wrong, but the Mission builder generates me nothing. Flights only, but no ships at all... Also naval bombers like Backfires are placed off map. Is there a way to make the quick mission builder to work the same way like with IcelandNA?

I'm at work right now, so I am unable to download this add on, and check it.  To generate carrier missions, it should ideally have a naval (water) bitmap, in 8-bit color, with the carrier stations for both sides identified on the map.  Basing land-based aircraft off the map is the only way to get them to work on such a terrain, and as far as I can recall, one must have the "off map" bases identified and "placed" somewhere (and they should all be "large" airfields).

Fubar: It has a water map and I been testing the map for a week. It relies on two things. First all your Carrier must be large enough to carry your aircraft and you need to have the Carriers installed and on SF2: NA level.

Also, you are not supposed to use a Backfire on this map. It is designed around the Carriers using their air wings.

What fleet are you flying as, what year and what Aircraft?

I tried with everything.... of course Soviet at the first time. Then USN.... Since it is the empty map, I wanted to use it for testing - to reduce loading times.

 

Besides aircraft nothing is put on the map. I tried to add them manually, but when I touched the save button, all is gone... it emptied the map immediately. Planes and ships... but all is working on the Gerwin IcelandNA I used until now. I tried dates... as simple as 1982 with Kiev class and Yak-38.

When I start the mission with planes only, it puts me into deep space, then the mission ends suddenly (I guess because there are were no targets)

 

Am I missing a file of some sort?

 

Aaa another thing, when I tried to add ships on the map, after I put them on the map, they were unmovable... then - as I said - when I saved the mission, they were all gone. I hope these symptoms help to identify the problems...

I find it all very strange. I tried a mission as the Soviets using the vertical packs; I had no issues. That being a single mission of course.

As regards to the mission editor, I experienced a similar thing there - unable to move task forces but I designed this for quick carrier battles; so you would not have to use the mission editor to edit out land-based aircraft every time - so I never paid it much attention. So long story short, use it for single missions and not mission editor. It seems like the carriers and task forces are for some reason added after the mission editing stage. Might be a side effect of no land based aircraft thing. I will take a look at the Water_BMP, the only file I could imagine is responsible for this.

That's what I wanted, single missions... in quick mission builder. To generate something fast, to see how much the game loads. I wish I could help more, but terrain editting is not my field of expertise(( 

 

In such cases I used to "steal out" parts from working stuff.. :biggrin: I think you should try to re-adding fake airfield for both sides to see if that is messing with the generator's code... ((

The Fake Airfields are already there. They simply cannot spawn any Squadrons. That is how the map supports Campaigns.

Problem solved.

 

Having a water map is simply not enough, it has to be in a 8bit BMP. Any other format and it goes to fuck-all. This explains A LOT of issues I had with them.

That said, it does not solve all the issues. Now the Carriers seem to want to spawn a little all over the place, preferably as close to one another as possible without regard for the zones I put for them. I will see what can be done about that.

Yes, regarding the fleet random generation it was the water map...  I made a new one myself, and it is working so so. But now there are other problems.

 

- As red side each time I want to create an Intercept mission, the game crashes to desktop.

- The mission builder does generate Red side land based planes starting and ending in the air... It has to otherwise the mission would be pointless without enemy planes when the generator places no enemy carrier... and it happens quite often.

- When no Blue side carrier exists, then there is no Blue aircraft at all, so the above "feature" may be one sided only...

- There has to be Naval_search plane allowed even if land based as it is somehow a requirement to cruise_missile type mission the game generates ...

- And yes, sometimes a blue amphib group is generated next to the Red CVBG...  But it happened in IcelandNA also if I remember.

The other problems are exactly why I ask people to make sure they have the proper aircraft and ships before they try to play the map.

 

If you have proper aircraft and ships for both sides, they do not appear.

Stock is proper enough? All carriers are stock (except my Kiev (82))  All US Navy planes are stock.  I have my Yak-38 and 41M modded. You yourself recommend them in the desription. So which are improper ships and planes that cause crash?

What year are you playing at?
In the USN / Soviet setting, I found that any year after 1979 work for me and I only have stock USN assets and the vertical pack.

I am sorry I cannot be of more help, but I do not encounter this issue myself.

Between 80 and 95... Ships cannot be the cause..

Maybe a plane (or the lack of?)... but which... and why.  On the red side, when I set the mission parameters, and I want to enter the QMB with mission type Intercept set, the game crashes. Most interesting because I don't have blue side plane addons in this era (just the Skyraider for Nam) but I do have red side planes which show up even if red side has no carrier generated. On blue side, no such "phantom" planes... if there is no USN carrier, the air is empty, I dont have targets...

 

Edit: I tried with a completely empty addon folder with only the flyable Yak38...  Red side intercept still crashes [Fault Module Name:    SingleMission.DLL].

       Game still adds stock MiG-23MLDs and Mig-21bis to red side. And nothing to the blue side. About 80% of the cases there are no blue side aircraft at all.

 

Maybe you have a file or something I do not have and it's not in the stock game either?

Like I said, this is all very weird to my and my expertise is sadly not terrains. All I can say is that these issues do not show up for me.
 

I fly in the 2014/2020 period with Naval Search planes, Carriers, escorts and aircraft added into my personal little playground.
The F-14 stops at 86, so maybe you should get the F-18 or the Mirage Factory F-14 package for blue side?
