B52STRATO Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I found nothing about the aicraft today's status. However rummaging through my books about the BUFF, an article mentions the accident. "On January 10, 1964 the unit is engaged in operations far along an "Olive Branch" road in the Rockies. The B-52 is heavy loaded (two Hound Dog and full fuel) and operates at high speed (between 240 and 405 kts) and at less than 500 ft. Turbulences being too violent, the crew decided to climb to 13000 ft. The vertical stabilizer, already weakened, broke due to strong winds. Demonstrating remarkable control, both pilots succeed, after three-hour of flight, to land their flying wing, bringing with them precious datas. On January 13, just three days after, a B-52D (55-0060) from the 484 BW suffered a break in flight and crashed in Maryland. " 1 Quote
+streakeagle Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I saw the hound dog under the wing in the clip. Always thought they looked cool even if they were rendered obsolete by more modern cruise missiles. Quote
