I agree. I think they did good making a serious movie funny and then modernized it for the 80s. It also causes a lot of the Airplane to make more sense to me as well.

Thanks! I didn't know about the movie Zero Hour! before.

After some googling, I found this:
Zero Hour! is a remake of Flight into Danger (1956).

There is also a german remake (1964):

And another US remake (1971):
