Hurc's Nellis Range Mod
hurc replied to hurc's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
Not sure what happened there, I just downloaded the mod from CA and added it to my SF2V mods folder and it seems fine ? Did you already have the range terrain and tell it to overwrite ? -
Hurc's Nellis Range Mod
hurc replied to hurc's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
I should say so, LOL .Checking, but it looks like the wrong .HFD file got in there by mistake. Hurc -
View File Hurc's Nellis Range Mod ***This is a replacement for the previous version 1.0*** This is a modification to the original bombing range to make the home base airfield a likeness of Nellis AFB and take advantage of some of the new Hi-Res Desert textures now available. It also includes some of the objects from the Mescalero Proving Grounds range made By ChampionsVA56. Nellis AFB is located alot farther South on the map that the original base was. This should eliminate getting aggressor A/C right over Nellis as you take off. A few drone and aggressor Aircraft are included in this download. You'll see these flying around the range, and parked at the Range Airfield. All weapons have been removed, or they are equiped with training missles so they won't hurt you. Only hostile aircraft with a "NationName=RANGE" or "AGRS" will show up on this terrain. A modified version of the NATIONS.INI file has been included. It is the stock file with the "RANGE" and "AGRS" nations added. You need the "RANGE" nation defined if you want the drone's showing up and need the AGRS nation for the Aggressor A/C. Provided your other terrains have their "LimitedNations" setup, you won't see the drones's or Aggressor A/C anywhere except the Range. A modified version of the SQUADRONLIST.INI is included with the USAF Thunderbirds squadron added. The bombing range targets use the layout of the Mescalero Proving Grounds range and the drones and Aggressor A/C use its runway to launch and recover. Note: the target area that was known as the Warehouse Targets is now Friendly and is a called the Range Control Facility. When you choose to do a Close Support mission, your tanks will be lined up defending it from the enemy tanks. One thing that is a "feature" not a bug, is that you will have Friendly A/C spawning from Nellis, sometimes right when you are, as Escort or SEAD flights. You cannot collide with them and they will go right thru you as applicable. Good Hunting! Steve "Hurc" Crane Submitter hurc Submitted 01/12/2012 Category Full Terrains

Runway texture problem!
hurc replied to Kodiak's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
If you have more than one season folder in the terrain, you might have a mix of runway files and they are copying over each other depending on the mission date. Try copying all of the hi-res runway files into each seasons folder and say yes if it prompts to overwrite. Hurc -
I realize these are AI only KC's , but my AI wingman and even autopilot are stalling and crashing just after takeoff for some reason. Using them in SF2. I noticed an odd control surface in the wing that seems to be either a spoiler or leading edge slat yet it hangs straight down not forward like a slat would - see screenshot. Is that normal ? Anybody else have this happening ?

Its got a name...
hurc replied to Slartibartfast's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Funny you should mention that... How about a updated SoCal focused on Red Flag, which I have as WIP ? I'm sure a back-date for a Top Gun ver will be doable. Hurc -
Got it done to my satisfaction. It's a stand alone new terrain called Nellis Range and does not replace the existing Range. It really is way too close to the bomb range for the use of Aggressor A/C as they can barely get airborne before the F-15s lock them up. I will just have Range drones as the enemy upon release. So I have another terrain now in the works for Nellis as well. Scal terrain will be the basis for a new terrain called Red Flag. It will include Nellis, Fallon, Yuma and multiple range targets in the Tonopah Test Range Area. Nations will be "Everybody" vs Range and Aggressor. I'm having issues flattening the terrain for airfield/target placement at the moment. Did I mention the Thirdwire TE sucks, LOL

Post patch observations: I found that the Hangar screen A/C now changes its "skin" when you change it on the in game A/C for the stock A/C anyway. I saw an odd thing with #3 and #4 A/C in a 4-ship flight of Typhoons I launched, they taxied around in circles and never took off ? They did show up with after I used the Alt + N fast forward. This happened on another flight as well , with the stock A-10. Different mission - On coming out of another Alt + N my F-15C was at 52Kft and climbing ? I was able to decend, but Auto didn't seem to want to, he was doing some kind of ASAT Space Command mission !

You need 3 things to work, at least how I got it working; 1 a "Fake Runway" in the types.ini (no LOD object assigned to it) 2 a target entry in the targets.ini for each fake airfield (as well as the real one) 3 a airfield layout ini file, the one with the takeoff/landing points, parking spots, lights, etc. for each fake airfield as well as your main airfield of course. So I have the main Nellis AFB in targets.ini using Runway2600, or whatever its named in the types.ini, then several more airfields in the targets.ini using the fake runway for object001 and thats all. They all use the exact coordinates and headings as if they are stacked on top of each other on the terrain. I get mixed results as far as what AI flights spawn, but usually get an escort or SEAD type coming along on the mission if I choose a Strike mission type. Next - Trying to figure out how to get Ramp Starts

It happened by accident, LOL. I was trying to add more varied "Parked A/C" that the game engine randomly generates, so I made a second "fake runway" but use the exact same coordinates as the real runway. Guess what, as long as you set your "squadrons=##" value it will generate parked A/C like I had planned. What I didn't expect was it would generate AI missions as well! And since friendly A/C can't collide, at least on the runway as far as I've seen, the AI flights spawn and take off as they please! So, Nellis, as I've built it, is like 6 airbases in one. No terrain objects needed except for the "real" airfield, the rest are unseen, use the same runway and parking coords, and they generate AI flights. I cant take all the credit for this, ChampionsVA56, who made the Mescalero Range mod has the "fake runway" in his terrain. I didnt know what it was used for. I think it is for his second Drone Launch Airfield, yet he uses terrain objects in addition to the hidden fake runway.

I feel the same way, that the SoCal map would be a better scale. But, that will require a Whole Lot of Work. Nellis is not even on the Blue Side of the friendly/enemy list. Almost a complete redesign would be needed. Will still think about that as a future option. I started out to just stick a new airfield into the original Range, but got a bit carried away, LOL. Help me Obiwan,

Guess what, I do have AI flights (I'm talking Randomly Generated, not a user made mission) taking off before, during and after my Player flight starts on the runway. If you choose a strike mission, its a good chance the AI will launch a SEAD plus an Escort flight to go with you. You can't control what they do, but you feel like you are part of a Strike Package, not just a solo day to day bombing practice mission. They all use the same runway so its an odd effect to have an F-15 flight taxi "thru" and past your own A/C then go on its mission.

Thanks, I'm going with "Nellis Range" at this point. Fixed the Aggressors not being encountered, just a typo in my nations ini. But they still have just the Range Airfield to T/O from at this point. If you decide to fight on their side they get taken out with a BVR missile by most of the allied opponents soon after launch. I need a Aggressor F-15 to add to the mix and even the odds or Nerf all the A-A ord or something. If there was another flat area at the top of the map I could add Fallon NAS up there or something to give more of the correct scale for a Red Flag environment. Hurc

Weird pilot position
hurc replied to ValAstur's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
It seems "Hollywood" has used the "fake pilot" on more than one movie too! This was a behind the scenes pic of Dr Strangelove; -
From the SF2 KB in regards to terrain conversion from SF1 to SF2: "In the main terrain ini, all 08 and SF2s have a statement for weather, below the PlanningMap statement: [WeatherChance] ScatteredChance=35 BrokenChance=25 OvercastChance=20 InclementChance=10 If it's not already there, you'll have to add it. You can adjust the numbers, but they MUST add up to 100." Is the "Clear" weather the default, meaning those WeatherChance entries add to say 80, then clear is the leftover 20% ? Sorry, but it wasn't quite clear (pun intended) Thanks, Hurc
