Did you try physicaly unplugging the joystick and removing it from windows? Also remove the game and installed it over again. Basicaly try starting everything new.

I don't know if this will help, but are you using a DOSBox frontend? I use D-Fend Reloaded and never had any problems with the joystick. http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/

That gatorade advice is interesting. I've always heard that we get a hangover because the body is dehydrated, so it makes alot of sense. Maybe the high sodium content also helps. What I find strange is that sometimes I get the worst hangovers in the world (God take me now) and other times I'm completely fine.
