I don't think our government is afraid of the tabliban (except for the usual "we can't afford many deaths if we want to win next ellection") What they are really afraid of is looking like "bad, militarist, aggresive" people. You know, they've been trying for years to convince people that our armed forces are actually some kind of "proffesional boy scouts" whose job is putting out fires, helping in situations like Haiti and this kind of things. And, of course, shooting at anyone (even if this anyone is a mass murderer terrorist) might be harmful for this fairytale picture they want to show us.

Problem is, thank to our laws having nothing to do with common sense, just defending yourself (shoot to the thief's foot, knocking hin senseless...) is more and more seen by our lawpeople like a crime. So if you decide to defend yourself, you must think seriously of leaving no proof or witnesses. Of course I don't like it (I'm not sure I'd be able to shoot even a non lethal shoot) but, should we let someone attack us or our families just to make our lawyers happy?

I don't think society has really become too soft in the matter we are discussing. I think the problem is that judges and lawmakers are not affected by this kind of problems like us lowly mortals. They don't need to think about the problems of self defence because they can go from home to their jobs without stepping on the streets, and when they actually decide to walk they have their bodyguards to deal with that. They don't need to think of anyone breaking in their homes because they live in houses with expensive security systems and guards patrolling the area, so why bothering with something that works fine for them?

Right now things are very similar here in Spain. The way thing are going nowadays, a time will come when if you are attacked and choose to defend yourself, you will have to make sure to not only win, but also kill whoever is attacking you and make sure the body is never found. Any other way you'll be in deep trouble just for defending yourself.

Most countries don't have strategic planes (heavy bombers, heavy cargo planes...) so I don't think this is a problem. It's like our baby carrier. It's not Nimitz class carrier of course, but it's all our pockets can afford (though even that might become too expensive for us the way our country is going nowadays)

I think there are other reasons. Probe and drogue system can be installed in airplanes where boom can not. At least I can't think of a boom system installed in an Hercules.
