ODS anniversary
Menrva replied to DEVIL11's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Well, a screenshot would be more helpful. The mod installer is contained inside a .ISO archive; you can mount .ISOs on a virtual DVD drive with DAEMON Tools (not needed with Win10, the OS can mount virtual disk images as well) or simply unpack the .ISO with WinRAR or equivalent software. -
Alternate TFD Terrain Tilemap editor/viewer
Menrva replied to gerwin's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Well said, man. Unfortunately, it is extremely time consuming to make some quality work. At least, thanks to gerwin's TFDtool and mue's TargetAreaEditor, we can work on all aspects of a terrain. This is simply not possible with TW's TerrainEditor. -
Alternate TFD Terrain Tilemap editor/viewer
Menrva replied to gerwin's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I no longer have it and I don't see why you need it. Rivers and roads need to be manually added with TFDtool, the texture list is only needed for a quick auto texturing at the beginning of terrain making. Unless you want to make all the tiling from scratch, which is extremely time consuming and not worth the effort. If you have an updated targets.ini, I can look forward to improve the texturing, target locations and the heightmap. Terrain making is my specialty. Just send me a PM with it and I'll see how much work is effectively needed. -
Alternate TFD Terrain Tilemap editor/viewer
Menrva replied to gerwin's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Yeah, that's the quick mock-up I made at your request via Stratos. I still have that terrain, but it needs so much work and I have little time for modding recently. Maybe in the future I'll get my hands back on it. -
My projects (GKABS)
Menrva replied to GKABS's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
This does not suffice. In order to add new sounds for use on in-game objects and weapons and guns, you must add proper entries for each sound file inside the SoundList.ini file in the Flight folder. For the ODS mod I had to add some 244 entries, it's horribly time-consuming but needed. -
Questions and asking for opinion about aircraft list sorting (Multi nations)
Menrva replied to Eagle114th's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Don't waste your time, you simply cannot. The campaign menu works with a different library, so it has got its own set of functions and instructions. Also, it is not a filter as you imagine it, it simply reads campaign data, so it shows all aircraft which are used by a given unit and service. There's no way to replicate this in another screen, we do not have an open code. Believe me, in all my years of modding in all departments of this game engine, I know what can be done, what cannot be achieved.- 26 replies

Questions and asking for opinion about aircraft list sorting (Multi nations)
Menrva replied to Eagle114th's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
A terrain's nations file only has the purpose to limit which nations and relative aircraft the AI uses, it does NOT remove other nations from the selectable list. The only way to do what you want is to remove nation entries altogether from the main nations.ini file which must reside in the Flight folder. We've done this for the ODS mod we released this January. If you have a good bandwidth, try to download it and check how it works there.- 26 replies

UTP-16LE/ Unicode help

UTF is Unicode. ANSI also works fine, but there's no need to re-save files. Leave all as is. -
Ecuador, Northwest South America (1981-1998)
Menrva posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
View File Ecuador, Northwest South America (1981-1998) Ecuador, Northwest South America (1981-1998) Terrain August 13th, 2018 (1st Release) by Menrva, tiopilotos and Stratos >For Strike Fighters 2, Recommended Full-5 Merged I am proud to present a new scratch-made terrain, the result of a joint effort of modders! Initially conceived by Centurion-1, the terrain was later salvaged by Stratos, who offered to help in its development together with tiopilotos. Stratos helped by hand-tiling most if not all the incredibly long rivers in the Amazon rainforest. The terrain later received an impressive tileset produced by tiopilotos! You guys have my deepest gratitude! The terrain completely covers Ecuador, a great portion of Peru, and even touches Colombia and Brasil. However, only Peru and Ecuador have been targetized at this stage. Numerous target areas, such as civilian airports and airstrips, have been added in order to expand playability, targets of opportunity and year range. This terrain features a fresh new 250m resolution heightmap (instead of the stock 500m resolution), allowing for greater details and precision in elevation changes; overall it provides the whole terrain with a better look. The terrain spans from January 28, 1981 (the beginning of the Paquisha Incident) to October 26, 1998 (when a resolution of the Ecuadorian-Peruvian territorial dispute was agreed upon through the Brasilia Presidential Act); it is designed for the Paquisha War of 1981 and the Cenepa War of 1995. Most air-to-ground missions (armed recon, close air support, etc.) take place at the border between Peru and Ecuador, to provide an even more realistic scenario. As in reality, there are few SAM sites placed at their precise Real World locations. Targets reflect Real World events as accurately as possible; for instance, some border outposts will appear only after a certain year, according to historic changes. Off Map Airbases have been added and long range AI flights can be generated from them, if you have SF2NA. Ground Objects are not included. It's up to the user to find and obtain anything that can be useful for the proposed terrain's scenarios. >Credits (in no particular order): -Centurion-1, for his interest in recreating such scenario in the Strike Fighters world. I heard RL got in your way, so... best of luck, mate! -tiopilotos, for the massive tileset he produced, and for his continuous support in all my terrain modding efforts. Thank you very much! -Stratos, for he brought to attention Centurion-1's unfinished terrain and offered to help realize it. -swambast, who provided me with invaluable help in tracking and fixing common and uncommon bugs. -gerwin, whose TFDtool has proved to be essential in today's terrain making. If the terrain is pretty accurate to RL it's also because of him. I included his very nice Airfield 7+8 Addon Pack, too. -mue, for the improved shaders he made, which I have included and reworked for the terrain, and for the tools he made for SF2 modding. -luk1978, for the waternormal bitmap he shared at the SF2 screenshots thread. Your mods are very interesting! -MigBuster, I have included some of his great hi-res textures for runways. -Stary, for the various hi-res tilesets and TODs he made, which have been re-used in this tileset. -Gepard, for his great tutorials about terrain making, in the SF1 Knowledge Base at CombatACE. It's a gold mine! -krfrge, who has produced a tutorial for recreating SF2-like planning maps, which prompted me to work on templates and my own high quality planning maps. Thank you very much! -comrpnt, for his Approach and Airfield Lighting Pack mod packages for SF1 series, which I reworked and included. Although scratch-made, the terrain makes use of most objects and target layouts from Wrench's Panama terrain; because of this, I included the ReadMe file from that package, to the end of giving proper credit to everyone involved directly or not. >Disclaimer: This is a freeware; yet it can be redistributed ONLY in other CombatACE mods/mod packages. Any changes to the terrain package's files and/or any copy-and-paste attempts of their contents are NOT authorized if you plan to release them in other mods. But permission might be granted to those who request it to me at CombatACE. This terrain may NOT in any way, shape or form be used in any payware additions. >My Terrain Packages: NovaLogic Terrains Outer Space Terrains Hawaii, Central Pacific (1959-2028) Timor, North Oceania (1950-2018) Ecuador, Northwest South America (1981-1998) Texas, American South Central (1968-2018) Sweden, Baltic Rim (2004-2018) Sweden, Baltic Rim (1952-1994) Libya, Central Mediterranean (1980-2011) Madagascar, Southeast Africa (1977-2018) Iraq, Western Asia (2003-2018) Alaska, Bering Strait (1955-2018) Iraq, Western Asia (1980-2003) >My Miscellaneous Packages: Ace Combat Nations Nations & Medals Expansion Speech Enhancement Wings Over World Menu Screens realSKY Environment Submitter Menrva Submitted 08/13/2018 Category Full Terrains- 6 replies

Heberth's F-22A Raptor Project
Menrva replied to Menrva's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Yeah, I'm sorry we didn't release this yet. We were working on a major rework of the cockpit last year, then the pandemic happened and the 3d modeller had to leave source files away from home. We restarted work recently with older source files. There's still much to do cockpit related, but I want to make sure it's a definitive release. -
Game Crashing During Campaign
Menrva replied to Sabre1BR's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
You need to specify, are you playing with the base stock game, or are you using mods? This is a common bug when you fly heavy bomber aircraft, but the stock game does not allow to fly with those. So either you are using a mod, or the patching goes wrong and the issue exists with flyable fighter jets. Can't you download the latest installers from ThirdWire's store? -
Thirdwire Forum moving to Discord
Menrva replied to MigBuster's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I have my own gripes about the game as well, as I said previously. You have no idea how many game engine-related issues I discovered, most don't even know about them in detail. By being an amateur programmer, I can also figure out what is feasible to fix, what is not. But that attitude I've seen will make sure TK abandons PC development forever. Perhaps that's what they want to achieve. There are polite and constructive ways to express criticism. Resentment brings nothing. In all honesty, I have seen much much bigger and richer companies do worse wrongs to their customers than TW. You don't like something? You get a refund. Go tell that to EA and the likes. -
Thirdwire Forum moving to Discord
Menrva replied to MigBuster's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Now I wonder if it will last long. Some joined just to despise it. If that's the attitude, I have no idea why they joined in the first place. You always have Twitter and Facebook to contact TW and spit on TK. Also, a little note: I am sure TK removed hosting of old patches and the old forum site due to server costs, because these things don't come for free and I highly doubt he's rich. He's an indie developer producing niche (thus not so profitable) products, but saw even less profits due to illegal distribution of his games. In all of this, Discord is a free service (with some limitations) he can leverage. Bottom line is, we do have reasons to criticize TK and how PC development ended abruptly. On the other end, the jerk attitude I've seen surely won't change things for the better. TK promised a Win10 patch with a failed crowdfunding, claiming that through loans he would cover costs for development all by himself. Then the pandemic happened, and recently all of Texas became a snowball. Despite this, I also remember he gave away free copies of SF2 to those who supported the crowdfunding, something which was an unexpected surprise to all. Here at CombatACE I have made countless posts where I criticized TK and some of his design choices (and relative bugs) in Strike Fighters 2. But there's a limit to everything, I think. For once he's done something good for himself and the series, it's a small step but in the right direction; apparently someone wants to shoot him down, flying too much in the virtual world while forgetting there's a real one full of issues. Feel free to enjoy the (unpolished as well) DCS products and/or those games from famous publishers, filled with cancer DRM and MTX. My rant is over. -
Thirdwire Forum moving to Discord
Menrva replied to MigBuster's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Definitely. I already have a Discord account and I just entered the server. This was unexpected, in a very good way. Discord is powerful for indie developers. Project Wingman, an arcade flight combat game, uses Discord to maintain fans updated about further developments etc. You can find lots of other examples as well. I feel a little guilty, for years I (and many others) complained about TK not listening to his true fanbase. This might change things for the better. Good move from him, I totally support this endeavor. -
Redemption story
Menrva replied to macelena's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
That's what we did for the recent ODS mod, hence SA-8s appear often, the Iraqis had quite a number of them. Still, we have two models of it with different characteristics and missiles, the most deadly can be put to Mobile_SAM so that it appears only during CAS missions. Other related news to ODS, the Desert Storm campaign was overly long due to some wrong assumptions I made about number of sorties and usual length of a pilot's tour of duty. In the next update the campaign will progress much faster, so it should be a bit easier to survive through it. -
Impassable escort missions
Menrva replied to SandMartin's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Not sure what you are trying to do, you must assign the Escort mission type to jammer aircraft such as the Prowler or the Raven. We haven't tried with attacker aircraft such as the A-10A, it would be pointless and not realistic. The fact the AI use the Prowler to engage SAM radar sites during Escort is a bonus, their main role is to use ECM as cover for the Strike flight. -
Impassable escort missions
Menrva replied to SandMartin's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
You're wrong. The Escort mission type simply spawns an escort flight, it does not force air combat. The stock game assigns that mission to fighter jets and also spawns enemy aircraft for what becomes pretty much a dogfighting mission, but if you assign the Escort mission type to ground attack aircraft, those will use their weaponry appropriately against ground threats. We already implemented this in the recently released ODS mod. Prowlers use their weapons against SAMs, while Ravens can only employ their ECMs against enemy aircraft and ground threats. The only issue is that the Escort mission type always spawns enemy aircraft, so if you're in a Prowler you'd better use your ECM and avoid being engaged by air threats.* *without counting the rather usual stock game bug where the Strike flight does not engage ground targets and instead flies in a straight line, making the Escort mission impossible to complete; no fix for that without a source code. -
Operation Seelöwe
Menrva replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - World War II Forum
Keep up the good work and do not let this discourage you. Campaigns are pretty difficult to get right, I know since I created them for the recent Operation Desert Storm mod. If you need some help or suggestions, feel free to send me a PM. -
I was among the first to move to Windows 10 back when it was available as a free update to Win7. I would never go back to an older Microsoft OS; Win10 improved so much over time and it has got much to offer in terms of functionalities, be it backups or re-installations of the OS without losing any of your installed programs and data. If anything goes wrong with Win7, you're basically f*cked; sometimes I was obliged to reinstall the OS from scratch, and lose all my files and data with that. With Win10, you have more security even on this regard. Retro gaming is no issue with it, for those who know how to use wrappers, emulators and other related software.

Maps/terrains building
Menrva replied to m275500's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
AFAIK that's not true, Wrench. Map Scale does not affect anything in the TE from what I see, you always end up with a 60% sized terrain. The only way to create a Real World scale terrain is to do what Gepard says in his tutorial. I do not suggest to create Real World scale terrains for the jet era due to a lack of in-game refueling mechanic. A real scale terrain will work just fine with islands and archipelagos, though. The only Real World scale terrain I made is the Hawaii one I released in December, and there's another one which is a WIP. -

This could be a major breakthrough!
Menrva replied to Wilches's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
Now that I think about it, I had your idea back when I was creating the Iraq terrains; I really wanted not to make two/three separate versions. I'm pretty sure some modders before me had already tried this years ago. -
This could be a major breakthrough!
Menrva replied to Wilches's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
I just did, and for the reasons I explained above, it doesn't work. The season function enables to read different textures from a sub-folder, but not alternative terrain configuration files. No major breakthrough, sorry.
