Falcon1364 Posted Saturday at 03:21 PM Posted Saturday at 03:21 PM Hi Everyone, I hope that all is well. I have a question about the ZSU Shilka tracer. Is it possible to change the tracer color to red? Thanks a lot.
Flanker562 Posted Saturday at 05:46 PM Posted Saturday at 05:46 PM You can try and find the texture and put it in your mod folder and see if that works it after modifying it. If not then it may be hardcoded, unless you can change the texture in the Gun folder, and a cursory check seems that you can't.
Wrench Posted Saturday at 06:22 PM Posted Saturday at 06:22 PM The green IS historically correct for most, if not all Red Side guns. Don't forget the accounts from Vietnam of "basketball slzed green balls flying past the airplane" it's coded in the gun's data ini; it's a simple text edit to switch it from Commie Green (tm) to Western Red -- just look at the data is for, say, the Mk.12 20mm or the Vulcan. It's the callout for the 'tracer**.tga' You WILL probably have to create a 'new' data ini for the Shilka's 23s, and create a /Guns sub folder in you /Objects folder, then put the modified inis (both a main and data) in there. Or find one of the weapons packs with the various guns already set up, and install and edit that one. the autocannon you're looking for is 23MM_AZP23 edit -- be advised, if you change JUST the tracer tga, that's a GLOBAL change and will screw up EVERY other gun that uses it. So, be careful what you do
Crusader Posted Saturday at 10:24 PM Posted Saturday at 10:24 PM It's mostly red tracers I'd say, red color doesnt affect the night vision as much as other brighter colors do. ZPU-1/2/4 14.5 mm have red tracer ammo, and ZU-23/ZSU-23-4 23mm too. Snip below for small arms ammo taken from forum.cartridgecollectors.org/t/tracer-colours/4703
Falcon1364 Posted 19 hours ago Author Posted 19 hours ago Okay, thank you for all the information. I appreciate all of you. I will let you know if I was able to change the tracer color.

Don't forget the accounts from Vietnam of "basketball slzed green balls flying past the airplane" If i remember correctly, and this is now more than 35 years ago, were our tracers white or light yellow. Maybe that there were different colors available, but i know only the white tracers. But to be honest, i cant remember to have seen tracers when Shilka was firing. ZU-23 had tracers, iirc Shilka not. The Shilka guns were directed by radar. The fire control system made the rest. So the gunner had no need for visual help, while ZU-23 gunners aimed only optical, and for them it was helpfull to see where the bullits are flying in relation to the target.
