Actually, take a look at what competed against the A-10:

Northrop A-9

Looks a bit familiar don't it? Similar needs sometimes result in similar solutions.

I always thought it had a superficial resemblance to the F-2 Banshee...

Imagine the confusion had Northrop won this contract....

A lot of guys thought it looked like a steroid version of the AT-37. And it looks small, until you notice how small the pilot looks in the pictures.

The funny thing is the A-9 looks like it was built for the same purpose as the Su-25, and the A-10 totally different.

While the A-10 can do CAS, it was built as a tank killer. The A-9 and Su-25 can kill tanks, but not as well...they were built for CAS.

If ugly is familiar :haha: Man, what an nasty looking "aircraft"! More like a beached dead whale. No style at all. Pregnant looking with a fat tail. Thank goodness we ended up with only the "Warthog" - what would the A-9 have been nick-named?

Who knows? They could have named it based on its sound, its handling...

I'd have called it Raisin Bran because of those 2 huge scoops.

Form follows function.

might have gotten the official name "mustang II" as for what pilots would call it, who knows?
