There was an excellent program on the Science Channel last night about the Soviet Lunakhod moon rovers of the early 1970s. These rovers were way ahead of their time and the world didn't catch up with the Soviet technology until the recent Mars rovers were launched.

By all means check out the program if you get an opportunity:

I've read (or see in some documentary, don't remember) that those space vehicles took much benefits from MBT technology in Soviet Union. But did not know that they were only recently outclassed.

Yes, according to the program, their designer was a specialist in tracked vehicles and worked extensively on Soviet tank technology.

I find the whole Soviet space programme quite fascinating.

The early unmanned stuff like the Venera's and Mars probes.

Read a great book by Dave Scott (of Gemini 8, Apollo 9 & Apollo15 fame) and Alexei Leonov (Voskhod 2, ASTP) chronicling their respective countries space programme "Two sides of the Moon".

Super read, if you're into such things. :good:

I LOVE that old-school space exploration. Perhaps because I grew up during it. ... yeah, I know, I"m old

Don't think they do, otherwise I'd be glued to it. I've yet to understand the appeal of Ice Road Truckers....how many times can you watch an 18 wheeler driving on ice?
