Was Strategic Air command,now since a few years is ACC Air Combat Command-both ex SAC and TAC Tactical Air Command-ADC Ithink was disbanded after the Cold War era and was Air Defence Command also MAC Miltary Airlift Command now is AMC Air Mobilty Command

You have to of been a SAC warrior to understand where J. Weed was coming from. There is some of us who are SAC trained killers and to used to think SAC was not only a real command, it was THE command.

I was never in SAC, as it was (unfortunately) done away with before my time, but I grew up in s SAC family, and that is exactly what SAC was, a family. Just look at the "Glossy Eagle" program. I spent weekends with other kids doing crap to make the B-52s look good. I can't explain it for people that were not a part of it. But there was the USAF, then there was SAC. There were USAF dependents, then there were SAC dependents.

The impression I got of SAC, thanks to the History Channel (when they used to show interesting things), made me scared of them. Not of SAC's mission or capabilities...but, of them.

One of the SAC old timers I know said in the '50's and '60's, they worked until the job was done, no 12 hour work limit. There were monthly alerts in addition to the wing airborne alert tasking.

 

In the '80's, our biggest worry was SAC MSET inspectors (Maintenance Standardization and Evaluation Team) who were quite knowledgeable from your own career field. We also had to endure SAC Inspector General (every three years) and Field Command, Defense Nuclear Agency inspections (every four years). Also had Wing Quality Assurance who always took an interest in our tech ops. Our wing alert exercises were quarterly. One aspect I hated the most was "Global Shield", which was like two weeks of 12 hour shifts. Try eating those disgusting "bag nasties" (in flight meals in the white box) for a week straight. Really hated mobility training.

 

At least in SAC we didn't have to worry about chem gear, hated our LSN's in USAFE.

Who (unit) was at Grand Forks in the late '80s?

I remember visiting GFAFB in the early '80s and watching 52s take off and land.

Later, watching the Bone on one of 3 landing/holding patterns from the GFs farm... ah those were the days... and having 3 Minuteman silos less than 5 miles from the house.

Trying to keep up with a Bone while they flew parallel to Hwy 18 in my '73 Pontiac... wings swept @ a few hundred feet!!

I was fortunate to get a personal tour of 'Vanna White' in 1988 w/2 friends of mine - did not know that we could have got clearance to take pics if we would have asked prior.

Also we 'flew' an instrument simulator and crashed @ Edwards!!!

This model is excellent! Brings back alot of memories.

Spent 3 years on a boomer, SSBN632 Von Steuben. Went out for months at time, just imitating a hole in the ocean. Every time we went out, we were on war status. Very boring most of the time.

We were getting a resupply flight and the escorts spotted a bunch of guys looking to shoot at the FOB, we spend sometime to make sure it's not an ANA/ANP patrol. It wasn't, so I clear them hot and have them do gun and rocket runs. We had a Bone on station, but we didn't need it. Too bad, wouldn't have minded a bomb drop for a picture
