Viggen Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 (edited) Can someone give me a few pointers and tips regarding External Hard Drives? Once I get the money I'm going to purchase one. Could someone name some good, cheap, ones that can carry lots of data? And, how the hell are these used? Caesar Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I got a WD "My Book" er something, 750GB, it's been reliable, I just don't like to leave it on for too long 'cause it heats up with constant use (it does take a while, but I just keep it off if I don't need it on.) They work pretty simply: by plugging them into a USB port they'll show up as another hard drive. Quote

Lt. James Cater Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I've become a real Western Digital fan in the last few months. The external HD i use is a Passport and it has really been a help. I also just finished replacing the Hard Drive on my ancient Dell 4400 with a WD Caviar SE. 500GBs that only cast me about $70 It took a whopping 20 minutes to pull the old one out and voila, in with the new. Tommorrow, a fresh install of WOE and transfer all my planes from the external HD. Go with Western Digital, you won't regret it. Quote

She had one of these and it ended up crapping out after about year. Power it up and it just sits and clicks and never connects. Not sure what happened. I've had very good luck with WD internal drives. Quote

+GrinchWSLG Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I built one, sort of. Bought an external enclosure from Thermaltake, has a fan and uses ESATA and USB2. Then just put a regular Western Digital 300GB HDD in to it. I'd probably do two things differently if I did it again though. First I'd get a 1TB HDD, but thats just because they're a lot cheaper now then before. Second, I'd try and find either an enclosure with a power button on the front, or one that's smart enough to shut down and start up with my PC. The enclosure I have now only has a power switch on the back. Quote

Are you using it for backup or as a main drive? you've only got 20gb left on your computer? have you gone through to clean stuff out that you don't need like old programs that you don't use? Quote

Typhoid: Pretty much just a place to put all my TW and FS installs into. I've been able to raise it to 32.7 gb now that I've put several installs on thumb drives, and deleted one.
