Unjamming Guns?

Recommended Posts

I play with the Gun Jams option enabled and while I try and fire quick short bursts, on occasion my bloodlust gets the better of me and I have gone in guns-a-blazing. Of course, this has sometimes resulted in a jammed MG or two.

I thought that in one battle, after I had jammed my MG, that I warped ahead and the gun seemed to have been unjammed. I have never been able to get that to occur again (and it could have just been something with my joystick and not a true jam at all) though so I was wondering what, if anything, I can do in game to unjam my weapon(s)?

Do they stay jammed forever, or is there some chance they might get repaired while still inflight? Does warping actually help in this case?

Anyone have any insight into this?

Thanks!

As I understand it, this was added to the game to simulate a heat jam, also to discourage newbies with unlimited ammo from just holding down the trigger and hosing the area. [there was a long thread on this jamming in the past few weeks]

Your guns will cool, however. I favor snapping off single shots as fast as I can. The guns don't jam, and I can walk the rounds in, then finish with long bursts.

I've only had a gunjam a few times and they did clear themselves but after some time ... perhaps 5 maybe 10 minutes I think. I don't think you can unjam them manually ?

Or perhaps you could get over the stigma of numbers in your log book and switch jams off in Workshop

LOL ! No way man ! Realism stays at 130% PERIOD

I did some more testing and have found that with a little patience *usually* I can get my weapons to unjam.

Of course, the best bet is to not jam them up in the first place, but it's cool to know that this is modeled as well.

In fact, I have even had instances where I got both guns to jam, but then only one of the them unjammed!

If you listen real close you can even here the empty "click click click" sound when you try and fire a jammed weapon.

I love little details like this!

"It's a lot easier to learn to control your blood lust. I'm rather cheap with my ammo in a burst."

Absolutely. I doubt that any of my bursts exceed about 10-15 rounds. Am I the only person who instinctively fires a couple of rounds when setting out, just to ensure that I'm not kicking off a flight with a gun jam?

Just finished a QC with my camel and wingmate vs. 4 albatross DIIIs (man i hope thats the right plane. im a wwi n00b).

After going round and round for a few minutes trying to clear bandits off my own tail while shooting badguys off my wingmate, i finally get a great close up clear shot at the ol boys engine. He's practically FILLING my view as he tries to slip out of the way. I get right in close and pull the trigger.......nuthin! Pull it three more times nuthin, nada, zipo!!!

Now my target has sliped under me and out of the way...but i got bigger problems. 3 badguys left and my guns are jammed. Normally being a QC flight and all (just for practice) i would hit esc and just start a new fight. But all the vet pilots here talkin about realism and dead is dead, i thought. "what the heck, let's see what the ol' wingmate can do."

So for the next few minutes (which seemed like forever with no guns) I darted in behind any gerry who was trying to line up my buddy all the while shouting "taka! taka!taka!" at the screen like Mr.Cane in the battle of britain. It was fantastic. My antics were giving the huns fits, and since they had no idea i was unable to fire my weapons, they would break off one after the next. Finally it was down to 2v2 and one of the enemy crates was smoking and heading for home with my wingman in trail. But he had company as the last remaining german pilot was lining him up. One last time I rolled over and dove on this six and just as i was about to let loose a verbal assault on my target THE GUNS LIGHT UP!!!. And drowning out my voice was the roar of both mgs firing nicely.

Perfect stream of tracer rounds right into the engine and cockpit and the agonizing scream from the german pilot as i roared past confirmed that THOSE guns were real that time.

Nice little touch of realism that adds to this game every time i fly it.

S!

while there is a topic about gun jams.

- are in BHAH gun jams only occuring when shooting too long?

- is it possible to get gun jams randomly (maybe because of bend rounds or something like that)?

- can AI also have jams?

- is there a file one can alter, when a jam should occure randomly or when overheating? i would like to happen it more often. IMHO the guns were much more unreliable.

thank you

I've had my guns jam only a few times, and it always happened when I fired too long bursts in the heat of battle. So that was clearly a case of machine guns overheating. Creaghorn's question is a good one, I'd also like to know if the AI guns have jams and are any other gun problems modelled in OFF. As far as I know (please correct me if I'm wrong!), the infamously unreliable aircraft engines of WW1 aren't modelled as such (ie. you can't lose power suddenly or have any other nasty surprises while in the air), so I wonder if there's any more details about the guns...

y'know, it's NOT just from holding down on the trigger too long. I was flying my second mission in a Fokker E.III campaign (never fired a shot until I dove at that balloon)--so here I am diving at about 120 mph and I press the firing button and....

nothing. absolutely nothing. I come back around for another pass and.... absolutely nothing. I can't figure it out. then I put on the HUD display and see that I fired all of maybe a bullet and that the gun jammed up. by this time I'm literally blown into a million pieces by a direct hit from flak and tumble down in a swirling cloud of flame, metal, and linen.

sometimes you just get VERY unlucky!

Funny you should mention that. There have been two or three instances where I drifted up close to a crippled enemy and put a burst into him and I'd have sworn that sombody yelled out. Thought it was my imagination.

i have found in my old folders of phase 2 times a gun jam patch. inside there is also a tool named jameditor.

in the readme text it's said you simply throw it into your OFF folder and run it. there you can adjust following i copied from the readme:

Adjustable Settings - minimum values in ()

-------------------

FIRETIME Max time Fire is held before causing possible jam - mSecs (500+)

JAMCHANCE Odds of a jam = JAMCHANCE/4 per Sec fire. Checked after FIRETIME expires. (1+)

FAILCHANCE Odds of a failure = FAILCHANCE/4 per Sec fire. Checked during norm firing. (20+)

MINTIME Min Time gun will stay jammed - Secs (1+)

MAXTIME Max Time jammed - Secs (>= MINTIME)

SNDTIME Jam sound repeat delay - mSecs (250+)

AI JAM Allow AI weapon jams - ON or OFF

i am wondering if it's also going to work for BHAH. but i don't want to mess things up.

please, can anyone of the dev's say if it's going to work?

i would like to have more unreliable guns if allowed to do so.

thank you in advance

And I flog myself daily with a cilice for atonement. But more unreliable guns ! Sir, you take the cake lol. The P2 gunjam mod was "unofficial" and not supported by the OFF devs. Be interesting to see what Pol/WM et al say if they respond.

Nope. I always warm my guns up... but when I get to altitude not when I set off. There's no knowing what little tricks those devious developers may have modelled and not told us of
