jeez. the last couple weeks i had pain in my groin area on the right side. i went through the games (baseball) with the help of a guy named advil. since last week the pain went to both sides and increased, and forced me walk like john wayne. so i went to my doc and he found out i sustained a inguinal hernia on both sides and surgery needed. DL for ???

that's the bad news.

the good news?

more time for BHAH!!!

Oh man Creaghorn,

Sorry to hear the bad news. Hope the surgery goes ok for ya. How long do you anticipate being down? Glad you can spend more time with OFF, but at what a price!

Bad luck! But such troubles are very common, especially for athletes. Fortunately inguinal hernias are quite easy to repair with modern surgical methods - I've participated in several such operations as an assistant (I'm not a doctor though). These days they use so called minimally invasive surgery, which means that they usually don't have to make any big openings that require plenty of sutures and take a long time to heal. Just a couple of small incisions through which they insert a small camera and the other surgical equipment and then fix the hernia(s) with mesh patches or plugs that you won't even notice are there (Lichtenstein method is probably the most common now in use). In some cases though the hernia can be so big that it requires more invasive surgery, but even then the recovery time is much shorter nowadays than, say, 30 years ago, because the methods have been improved so much.

I'm sure you'll be quite well before you even know it! Best of luck with the treatments! :good:

thank you very much,

i don't know for how long. depends on how bad it is and want kind of surgery is needed. it's not what is bothering me. it's more because i'll going to miss an unknown number of games and letting my team down. of course it's also part of the game to get injured, having sore arms, knees etc. sometimes bigger things leaving for offseason to get treatment. but it never was anything to put me on the DL. that'll be the first time and that's bullsh*t. but it could have been worse.

thank you jammer

thank you all for your encouraging words,

i don't think either it's something severe. at least nowadays. and thank you for the explanation, hasse wind. for me only the time factor counts. and i don't want to start through 100% one day too early, but neither one day too late. :bb2:

i don't know for how long. depends...

The good news is: you'll be on your feet before you know it. Of course, that's the bad news too: 'Means you'll be back on the ground before you know it. Good Luck to y'.

They'll fix you up right as rain. Had mine fixed 30 years ago, never looked back.

Cheers,

Been there, done that too... and got the 3 1/2" 'War scar' to prove it. ;)

It's a standard thing nowadays. Just enjoy the drugs they give you. For a week I was seeing things that I don't think a Priest would be allow to speak of. LOL!

I feel your pain. That is in the fact that I feel like I let my team down. I had knee surgery in Jan and it is not right yet. The surgeon said it had to do with the arthritis and that I will need a replacement in a year. If I understand correctly you are a catcher. I wore the tools of ignorance for many years right up to the Sr. A level. I have the crooked fingers to prove it. Then I started to have eyesight problems so I turned to umpiring  I played my last game in 1986 when I was I was 48 yrs old. Then I went to umping full time. Big catchers are my friends I like to hide behind them. I still ump for the little ones and train the younger guys. I will try to work myself back up as the season progresses, but every time I move the wrong way it hurts like hell and I lose my concentration which is not fair to the players. I love the game and will probably always stay close to it. As for letting down my team, it is the guys in my association that I consider my team.

Hope you get through this little setback quickly.

thank you all for your words, sirs

i would have answered earlier, but for some reason the forum didn't work on my rig for two days(side not found), neither of the girfriends till now.

typhoon, i can totaly understand your point and i think i am also wearing the tools of ignorance. i think real sport begins there, where it stops to be healthy. and i also think that's all part of the game. and umpiring is a hell of a job. i could never do it. i always try to have good atmosphere with the blue, but it doesn't work always. as a matter of fact i got ejected twice in all the years because arguing balls and strikes. of course that must not happen.

i am 31 and that's neither young nor too old for athletes. but as a catcher i can feel the soreness after a roadtrip or doubleheader quite more then when i was 20. thats the toll of the time i suppose. i was always proud of myself to have the reputation of beeing unbreakable and never getting serious injured, although catching. once i broke my ankle, but that was offseason (playing rugby to stay in shape, how stupid) but i was fit for springtraining. just lost my starting spot for couple weeks. so my streak of uninjureness (i don't count soreness and stuff like this) has finally ended.

i know it's obviously a routine surgery, but i simply hate to lose precious time during season.

thank you all. you're the best

I’ve never had surgery of any kind so I cannot relate to what you are up against. But I’m glad to hear from fellow OFF’ers that it’s not serious. I wasn’t much for sports growing up; I was the runt in the family. I did find camaraderie in the military so I can relate to letting your teammates down. I’m sure they feel bad for you as well. I take it that you don’t know when you will have the surgery. Keep us posted.

so i went to the specialist today.

the good news, both sides are not completely through, enough beaten up like the bottom of bags with potatoes, but not through. he said there is no possibility for treatment. wether it's through, then surgery, or it is not. so i asked him what to do? resting? doing nothing? he told me to do the same as i did before. no rest at all. i should immediately continue with practice and playing. of course it might continue to hurt somehow, but on some day it might break through completely, or it might heal within the time, of course procedure for healing takes much much longer. i'm quite happy because it could have been worse.

i told my skipper, hey, i'm back and ready.he told me, i'll start catching on saturday and after four innings we'll check how it goes. i told him, if it would hurt or something, i wouldn't admit it anyway. but of course he is right when he answered that only players with 100% should be on the field. anything else might just weaken the team.

the bad news. somehow i'm on the same spot as before. so i have to forget about it and waiting to get worse or to heal. i must not make the error and pay too much attention to it, otherwise i might look too much for it, waiting for something and seeing signs where no signs are (don't know how to explain in better english, i'm, sorry).

second bad news, again less time for BHAH!!!

I can sympathize. I had a similar condition about twenty years ago, it wasn't fully though, so was told to wait. Boy did it hurt when it finally fully popped! On the plus side, surgery now is less invasive than it used to be and it can be done very quickly now, so if it ever goes, I'm sure you won't be in hospital for more than a couple of days.
