Olham 164 Posted May 24, 2009 On the "Wings Palette" site from Russia (http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww1/f/178/175/0/8) I found this Austrian Hansa-Brandenburg D I fighter. What do you think this tank-like thing on the upper wing is? (I have an idea, after studying the other D I on that site).
Olham 164 Posted May 25, 2009 Well, this ain't no British plane - it's a Hansa-Brandenburg D I, from Austria-Hungary's fighters.

Olham 164 Posted May 25, 2009 (edited) No - here is a second pic, that makes me think, it must be a gun housing. Perhaps, to collect the empty, hot cartridges? Edited May 25, 2009 by Olham
rabu 9 Posted May 25, 2009 No - here is a second pic, that makes me think, it must be a gun housing.Perhaps, to collect the empty, hot cartridges? We used to buy those for our car racks.. it's a luggage carrier, obviously.
Rickitycrate 10 Posted May 25, 2009 To my knoweledge it is an enclosed schorzlose machine gun.
AROTH 0 Posted May 25, 2009 It's just a housing for the wing-mounted machine gun and sometimes goes by the unofficial name of "The Baby Coffin", due to its shape and appearance.

RAF_Louvert 101 Posted May 25, 2009 Yes indeed, the Schwarzlose gun mounted inside the housing on top of the wing to fire over the prop arc. One gawd aweful design as it allowed no way of clearing a jamb until after you landed and crawled up on top to undo the whole mess. Still, they built over 150 of these birds and there were actually a couple of Austrian aces that were fond of them. Cheers! Lou
