from Austria-Hungary's fighters.

No - here is a second pic, that makes me think, it must be a gun housing.

Perhaps, to collect the empty, hot cartridges?

We used to buy those for our car racks.. it's a luggage carrier, obviously. :wink:

It's just a housing for the wing-mounted machine gun and sometimes goes by the unofficial name of "The Baby Coffin", due to its shape and appearance.

Yes indeed, the Schwarzlose gun mounted inside the housing on top of the wing to fire over the prop arc. One gawd aweful design as it allowed no way of clearing a jamb until after you landed and crawled up on top to undo the whole mess. Still, they built over 150 of these birds and there were actually a couple of Austrian aces that were fond of them.
