Hi All:

Malibu43 and I have released a beta for version 2 of the SF2V Air & Ground War Expansion Pack. Version 2 is delivered in two separate downloadable files.

(Links removed -- obsolete)

Given the sheer number of additions and changes in this new version of the expansion pack, we strongly recommend installing to a fresh SF2 Mod Folder. Installing to a Mod Folder that contains version 1 or other mods could result in broken aircraft, ground units, weapons, etc.

Please keep in mind that this is a Beta. Although we've spent several weeks scouring the entire package for errors and omissions, I would be surprised if we hadn't missed something. If you do run across an error or problem, please report it here.

What follows is the complete ReadMe for the expansion pack...

1. What's inside:

This is intended to be an overall enhancement to the SF2 Vietnam experience without having to hunt for, download, and install some of the "must have" mods for the game. We've also made some great changes and additions to the terrain and campaigns to give users a wider variety of missions types to fly. At the same time we've also made changes to help the user control where they fly.

Here's a brief summary of what's new and changed:

-Terrain is split into North and South vietnam, with unique target areas for each.

-Two new campaigns that are centered around fighting in South Vietnam

-CA_Stary's Green Hell 2 Terrain Mod

-Brain32's VietnamSEA Tiles

-Better Widesky Environment Mod

For a more complete accounting of the changes and additions in this version of the "Air and Ground Expansion Pack" see the "Version 2.0 Change Log" below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Installation:

We strongly recommend installing this expansion pack to an unmodded SF2V Mod Folder. Installing to a Mod Folder that contains other mods (e.g., new aircraft, weapons, ground objects, etc.) could result in partially or completely broken installation.

To install this expansion pack properly:

a) Install and Patch Strike Fighters 2 Vietnam. Run the game once.

b) Unpack both RAR files (SF2V_AG-XP_v2_Part1.rar, SF2V_AG-XP_v2_Part2.rar) to a safe location on your drive.

c) Simply drop the contents of the "To_Mod_Folder" into your Strike Fighters 2 Vietnam Mod Folder (NOT the folder that the game installs to). By default your Mod Folder should be located here:

Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2

Windows Vista: \Users\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2\

If you have defined a custom Mod Folder, then drop the contents of "To_Mod_Folder" in that location.

d) Download the FOTI A-6A from here:

http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autocom=downloads&showfile=5014

Copy the "cockpit" folder from the .RAR file and drop it into the following sub-directories of the \Aircraft directory in your SF2Vietnam Mod Folder (objects/aircraft):

A-6A

A-6B

EA-6A

EA-6B

e) Optionally, you may also install the extra aircraft and other bonus mods included in \Extras and \Extra_Aircraft. Please see the ReadMes included in those directories for more information.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.Known Issues

- Default CAS loadout for A-1's should include CBU-25's on the outer wing stations, but the AI doesn't know how to use that weapon. So, load them onto your own aircraft, but don't load them on AI!

- The A-1H/J Attack loadout (used for CAS and Armed Recon missions) specifies LAU-32 rocket pods on the outer wing stations. These will not show in the Loadout screen even though they will be loaded for the mission.

- Similarly, in the Loadout screen some USAF F-4 loadouts may show either nothing loaded on the forward AIM-7 Sparrow missile wells or two ECM pods. In the mission itself those weapon stations will carry an ECM pod and a Sparrow respectively.

THIS IS A BETA, so please let us know if you find any other issues!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.Legal stuff:

I have signed onto the freeware "list" on combatace.com. As such, the work here can be included or used in other mods as along as they aren't payware and credit is given to the creator(s).

Thanks,

Malibu43 & eburger68

That oddity occurs when all the files needed for special features of the LORAN Owl are not in the proper place. Check to make sure that the following folders are in your \Aircraft directory:

DRHAW

LORAN

LORAN_dtls

Also make sure that the following files are in the \Aircraft folder:

CRHAW.LOD

Folks:

If anyone else has problems with the F-4D Owl and the files and folders listed in my previous email are in your \Aircraft folder, then download the following:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/sf2v/SF2V_Pilots.rar

Unpack the Pilots folder inside and drop it in the \Objects directory of your SF2 Mod Folder. That should solve the problem.

Hi All:

Thought I'd share some information about the two different terrains included in version 2.0: North Vietnam and South Vietnam. We decided to go with a split North/South scheme in order to impose more control over the different operations in North and South Vietnam. To that end, there are some key differences between the terrains:

1. North Vietnam

The North Vietnam terrain includes all the target areas that you are familiar with in the stock SF2V terrain. This terrain is designed primarily for Strike missions and the several mission types that support Strikes: Escort, Fighter Sweep (aka MiG Sweep), and SEAD (Air Defense Suppression) -- in other words, the core mission types for the several air campaigns conducted against North Vietnam. You can also fly Armed Recon and Anti-Ship missions.

2. South Vietnam

The South Vietnam terrain includes new target areas and target items in South Vietnam, eastern Laos, eastern Cambodia, and the DMZ area. It also includes target areas in North Vietnam up through Route Pack II -- roughly speaking, the Vinh area. This terrain is primarily designed for CAS, Armed Recon, and Anti-Ship missions, though you can also fly Strike and SEAD missions in the lower Route Packs. If you are unfamiliar with the Route Package system used during the air war in Vietnam, see these discussions:

http://www.airbattle.co.uk/d_history.html

http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=1394

Put simply, where the focus in the North terrain is air operations against North Vietnam, the focus in the South terrain is air operations in support of the ground war against the NLF (VC) and PAVN (NVA) units.

Here's another way to think of the differences between the two terrains when you're flying Single Missions:

1. If you want to fly Strike missions against the big targets in North Vietnam, select the North Vietnam terrain in the Single Mission screen.

2. If you want to tangle with MiGs as part of Escort or Sweep missions, select the North Vietnam terrain.

3. If you want to do battle against North Vietnam's formidable air defense network, fly Air Defense Suppression missions with the North Vietnam terrain.

4. If you want to fly CAS missions, choose the South Vietnam terrain. You will be tasked with supporting friendly forces throughout South Vietnam right up to the DMZ area.

5. If you want to fly Armed Recon missions, you can go with either the North or South terrain. With the North terrain, you get armed recon missions along the Northeast and Northwest rail lines down through the lower Route Packs as well as the northern third of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in eastern Laos. The South terrain will give you armed recon missions in the lower Route Packs and the complete length of the Ho Chi Minh Trail from the Mu Gia Pass in the north all the way down through southeast Laos and northeast Cambodia.

6. Anti-Ship missions are similar: you can fly them in both terrains. Northern shipping routes extend from Haiphong down to Dong Hoi; Southern shipping routes extend from Dong Hoi in North Vietnam down to the Go Cong area near the Mekong Delta in South Vietnam.

One word about Anti-Ship missions: it appears that SF2V introduced a bug in the single mission engine whereby the game will select only one ship/boat type for Anti-Ship mission. This type is determined alphabetically -- whatever "Cargo_Ship" type comes first alphabetically in the GroundObject directory will always get the nod, with zero variation (unlike CAS or Armed Recon missions where the game does vary target types). We named our new "Cargo_Ship" types so that the motorized sampan (A_Sampan) will be selected. If you want to fly against different types of ships, you'll have to rename the type you want to be selected so that it is at the top of the list alphabetically.

If you have any questions about the split North/South terrain scheme used in version 2.0, please let us know.

copied from the "File Announcements" - guess it fits better in here!

Hi Malibu43 - and Eric!

Wow, now THAT reads promising... And from the first glimpse it appears that all the goodies from your Expansion Pack v1.0 seem to be in again (I was looking for "SF2-adapted" wideskies and green hell).clapping.gif

Up to now I was running SF2V with only a few mods:

- your XP v1.0

- sundowner's great Phantom-skins of that era and scene

- F-100 "Pretty Penny"

- A-5A and RA-5C Vigilante

- RF-101 Voodoo

("Fly Them All" still to get implemented - I was reluctant to search for all the MiG's cockpits...)

Sorry for this "newbie-questions", hope you can easily answer them:

my approach to upgrading to your XP v2.0 would be

1) backing-up the existing "ThirdWire-folder" in my Vista's "Saved Games" to some other folder and deleting it from "Saved Games"

2) start SF2V anew (I think/hope, the freshly started game will create a new "basic/virgin" folder under "Saved Games" again - right?)

3) installing your XP v2.0

4) re-installing my a.m. mods except for your XP v1.0 ( - or can I just copy my F-4, F-100, A-5a, RA-5C and RF-101-files from the back-up? No, this would end in the result lots of things like "effects" and "weapons" coming with the add-ons missing, then... So, re-install is a must, I guess.)

5) re-installing my Pilot's data from the back-up

6) forget about anything that MIGHT have been in your XP v1.0... Guess there will be nothing anyway - at least nothing I would be able to spot....cool.gif

Main difference to your installation guide is that I'd love to avoid re-installing the basic and patched SF2V (although this would be the "cleanest" solution) - because it takes quite a lot of time... I would try to and rely on the game itself creating a new/clean folder if nothing can be found in "Saved Games".

(Well, I will find out when I try it this way this evening and can/will post the result...)

Reading your description, I get it right, that only the planes denoted as "flyable" will really be flyable, right?

Hum, when I add FOTI's A-6 cockpit not only to the A but to B and EA-6A/B, too, I should be able to fly those, too, right?

Finally (and without having it already seen "in action") a big thanks, drinks.gif and Salute.gif for your work.

Seeing that mass of added planes (Skyraider! Intruder! Herc! Provider! Bronco!) I hardly miss anything (except for choppers, maybeheat.gif ) anymore.

Oh, one proposal, if I may: I was lacking the possibility to create own missions starting from the carrier's deck (all my "own" flights take of from shore AB runways) - it THIS something that could be added in a mod like your's maybe? Would be the "final touch" for me!ok.gif

Thanks again and very much looking forward to seeing it this evening

Oliver

Oh, there's still one question left: I just started a Campain a few days ago. From where in the back-up can I restore my progress? Is there a "Campaign"-folder in my mods holding all the data (unfortunately I don't have it before me now), or are there other sources to copy data from?

Just did a fresh install of SF2V merged with SF2E. No textures on the J-6 Farmer C.

Absolutely unbelievable work with this package. Have spent the afternoon flying F-4Js with VF-96 in Linebacker I. Good work.

I have the same issue. It's unrelated to this package though. I posted about this at Thirdwire official forums but unfortunately nothing could be done:missing .

By the way, thanks for the help with the Owl Phantom. Problem resolved.

That's very odd, because we don't do anything with the J-6 texture (or the .INI that points to it). Could you list what files and folders are currently in your J-6 directory?

All the saved campaign data for your pilot should be in the \PilotData directory. Unfortunately, if you attempt to restore it to your new Mod Folder's PilotData dir, you very well could run into problems because the expansion pack installs new campaign files -- ones that are different from those used by the game when you started the campaign. Safest course of action would be to start a fresh campaign with the expansion pack.

Copied from the File Announcement Thread, just as a heads up:

FWIW - I have already enlisted comrpnt to write a couple "template" USNrecon missions that will be included in the final release version ofv2.0 of this expansion pack! :ok:

Moving forward with this expansion pack, one of the things Eric and Ihave talked about doing is focusing on even more scripted singlemissions as the next step. This last release has put all the aircraft, objects, weapons, and effects in place. The next thing we plan on doingis putting them all to good use in some missions...

Hi All:

This morning I discovered one problem with the EA-6B Prowler that was previously overlooked: the weapon stations are misnumbered. Attached is a new DATA.INI that corrects the problem. Simply drop it in your EA-6B folder, overwriting the existing one.

Glad you're enjoying it Dave!

Maybe I should add this to the readme... If you're flying USAF skyraiders, you could (or should) change out one of the 150 gal drop tanks for an SUU11, and replace the LAU-32's (on your aircraft only, not AI) with CBU-25's. I then challenge you to run out of ammo on a CAS or Armed_Recon mission.

Yeah, I am amazed, too! Very good job...

Just had to fix that prob with the OWL.....

Only thing I lost was my campaign-data - but as I only started it two days ago, it was not too much to grief over.... Started a new one already...

And/but I have to do without the Extra A/C 130's. I don't have a source to get the needed .LOD and .SHD-data from... dntknw.gif

Thanks again!

Eric L. Howes

The J-6 directory has only 3 files in it, the J-6.ini, J-6_data.ini and J-6_userlist.ini. Nothing else. No folders or anything. I hadn't noticed before, but there are some other weird things in my mod folder. I've got aCanberraSeat2, a DRHAW, an EG_Pilot1, a LORAN, a LORAN_dtis, a NorthropSeat, a PilotGear1, a RacksB, a Seat_f-104, a tiger01, a tiger02, a usafpilot01, a usafpilot02 and a Weber_Seat folder under my objects\aircraft folder.

I'm guessing these aren't meant to be there, and I'm also guessing there should be more under the J-6 folder too, right?

Any ideas, Eric?

Thanks.

Cannot check that right now, but can it be, that these are the files coming with the "Pilots"-folder to fix that OWL-problem? The file's names sound so VERY familiar to me....

Just reread the previous page. Yeah, three of those folders are where they should be - the LORAN, LORAN_dtis, and DRHAW folders. Not sure about the others. Still concerned that my install doesn't have any folders under the J-6 directory.
