My Dream Flight Sim

Recommended Posts

So, since all of you are really awesome, I want to let you guys know about a sim I wish I could make. Okay here goes.

The flight sim can be land or carrier based( I like carriers so Carrier based for me) now your base has additional features such as a lounge where you can hang out with other pilots in the squadron and play pool, an old school arcade, or a pinball game . You can explore the carrier or base or watch some flight ops. If you're on a land base you can drive around a bit.(maybe too much on that one).

But this is what I really and have always wanted in a flight sim. When you eject from the craft you can play a little mini side game where you have to blast your way to the rescue point.(unless you're in freindly territory you just run)

What do you think? Do think they could do a little more to flight sims nowadays?

yeah sims in general are becoming a dieing breed no matter what the genere of it no one takes intrest any more racing sims are leaving there all arcade now and flight sims have left the consoles completley with fsx which is good but is only a commercial avation sim i think the entire sim community should get toghter and make some of theses developer realize were starving for news stuff

btw you idea sounds really cool id buy it

I had the same idea, mine was based on the carrier. This was probably about 15 years ago, but I thought computers would never be able to handle it. Damn, looks like I was wrong again!grin.gif

The Origin "Commander" series of games had you doing stuff like that between missions. In fact, Wing Commander had you on a carrier...in space, but a carrier! As for the FPS when not in the cockpit, JSF even gave you a pistol with a few rounds (DCS doesn't). I think the Battlecruiser 3000 series which has become Ultimate Combat or something now offered space ships and FPS as well?

Anyway, the best hope now is to mod a game like Arma into having more realistic flight stuff as there's no way to tack FPS onto a flight sim later.

Good point there JM,

in fact I miss the oldschool interactions between your commander, wingmen and that hot girl in a suit before next sortie. Strike Commander did it best for me, but WC (the sprites based, before Mark Hamill) was close too

Quite honestly, I would prefer a Vietnam War fligth sim , but done rigth, I espected so much from WOV , and my god what a let down , I mean a Vietnam War fligth just has so much potencial to really take you into the war itself, but they screw that up with WOV, same goes to Wings over Israel.

Off course its my oipnion I could be wrong grin.gif

Yeah it can be done - its the time it takes and the demand for such a thing - probably wouldn't cover the development costs I'm afraid.

I think it's a great idea. I was thinking about something similar. You'd have to maintain food points to stay alive, so you'd have to eat grubs. You'd get water from the dew on plants. If your radio started up within earshot of the enemy, you'd be in big trouble. You could contact BAT-21 in a Skymaster or call on Sandy's to strike forces near your position.

Could be lots of fun.

Battlefield Vietnam in 2004 had a basic implementation as well - get in a jet, fly around (F-4/A-7/Cobra/Chinook/MiG-21/17/Hind, eject and carry on fighting in the jungle - couldnt really say it was a flight sim though.

Interestingly, a new driving sim will be incorporating some of the OP's ideas:

http://www.testdriveunlimited2.com/

In addition to the driving portion of the sim, you'll be able to set up your house (mansion, really) complete with incredible garage as well as your out-of-car avatar. In the online portion of the game, you can invite people over to your house to hang out before or after engaging in multiplayer racing events. Its a very cool concept.

ARMA isn't really a simulator when you get an aircraft

Just a personal view, but it would be pretty much the same as any Jet Sim.....There's a limit to what you can do with it.

An F-16 cockpit is just that... the missile targeting systems, are all missile Targeting systems...and a Carrier is a Carrier.

Therefore, like you say...we need something along the Lines of Strike Commander...with a Plot.

I lost interest in Jet Sims after Strike Commander...they were all just the same to me

I'll grant the 90s sims had a feel to them outside of the cockpits that current sims lack. The in-cockpit experience has overall improved (with specific exceptions) but instead of feeling like a pilot at a base in between those missions you feel like...a shlub sitting at his computer.

The Russian sims from ED and Oleg are extreme examples of that. TK's sims at least have the hangar screen which makes an attempt, but he's a small operation and really couldn't spend more resources on that.

Some classics for the "out of plane" experience were F-15 SE 3, Longbow 1 and 2 (which had the best tutorials ever in a sim), and a WWII one that I can't recall the name of now but I can still remember the screens!

JM, that`s exactly what I was thinking, il2 is a damn good game, I play it since the first Demo arrived in europe, but when you are not in flying around in WW2, you are sitting infront of your desktop... like a nerd :dntknw:

Anyone remember Origin's lone historical period sim, Wings of Glory? It was Wing Commander in WWI.

The flying was great, it was the first sim I remember which had the straining wood and fabric sounds of the plane when you pulled g's, you had incendiary ammo that was great at starting fires and jammed the guns a lot, and between missions it really captured that aerodrome feel better than RB ever did.

Its failing was the missions were designed like you were still flying Wing Commander! First waypoint, 3 enemy fighters. Second waypoint, 3 enemy fighters. Third waypoint, Zeppelin...escorted by at least 3 enemy fighters. Time to go home? You'll have to fight at least 3 more enemy fighters to get there! In a space fighter with recharging lasers and shields you can do that...in a Camel you can NOT. I was always running out of ammo during the Zeppelin attack and having no way to defend myself to get home...
