OT: What else are you playing right now besides OFF?

Recommended Posts

All true from what I've heard. Not sure how I'll feel about DA2 once I finally get around to it. Origins was very Baldur's Gate like but still missing something. That quest in Shadows of Amn to kill the lich in that Elven Forest has to be one of the most dark and epic quests I've ever been on.

Javito, all Shadows of Amn is epic. I really didn't played this back in 2000. At the time I was only interested in fps.

I didn't play any RPG since "The Eye of Beholder" in 1990, with the exception of Diablo II (which is more an Hack 'n slash than a proper RPG).

Thanks to Origins, I begun again to play cRPG's. I've so many of the old games to explore likeToEE, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale I & II, Divine Divinity, Arcania, Fallout 1& 2,etc, etc. etc.

Have you visited Good Old Games? They have just about all those classic old school RPGs, DRM free and handsomely priced. I've got so many great games from them, including the Baldur's Gates, Planescape, both Icewind Dales, both Fallouts, and more. I'm not one for shameless plugging but it's a great, game-loving group of Poles that runs that site.

The original Fallouts are fantastic, eons better than Fallout 3, which I didn't like. One of the reasons I look forward to playing New Vegas so much is that it's made by the same team behind Fallout 2.

And Planescape... well, what more is there to be said about that one? I left off about a week ago, ten hours into it, and it's a real gem.

They just don't make them like they used to. I'll be very bummed if Dragon Age 2 disappoints, I've had high hopes for this series carrying on the Baldur's Gate legacy. Origins was such a delightful game, the backstory presented in the Codex alone was worth the price of admission, let alone the wonderful character interaction. The Mass Effect games are brilliant too, but different kind of RPG entirely really.

Witcher 2. That's one to look out for, the developers are very much into hardcore cRPGs. Actually I think it's the same company that runs GoG.

Yes. I've bought already some games from them. Baldur's (4 in 1 boxset) and the Icewind Dales (3 + 1 boxset) I bought a physical hardcopy. It was cheaper than GoG.

The original Fallouts are fantastic, eons better than Fallout 3, which I didn't like. One of the reasons I look forward to playing New Vegas so much is that it's made by the same team behind Fallout 2.

Yes, I know a lot of people who has the same opinion has you. Fallout 3, I played for 10 hours, and found it boring. I should give another try, but I'd like to try before New Vegas.

And Planescape... well, what more is there to be said about that one? I left off about a week ago, ten hours into it, and it's a real gem.

For many the best cPRG ever and the best story. I'm just have to play it.

No they don't. Look what is happening with Deus Ex. Human Revolution. I'm preparing for worst. The most wanted and probably the greatest disappoint.

Yes it's the same, CD Projekt. I've some confidence. At least the story will be good. Let's see what they have done with combat and the RPG part. Graphically seems to be much better than DA2. I've pre order it, a physical copy. It's like the old days. It bring some goodies. And I'm not referring to the collector's edition.

The price is the same or even slightly cheaper than digital.

P.S. I'm in Chapter 4 of Shadows of Amn. I thought I was more near the end than I'm. Great. :good:

I haven't decided on a name yet, it involves flying aeroplanes older than the ones in WWI,

So I've had a fun night. The wife fell asleep in the middle of Farscape, so I escorted some recon planes over the lines in my OFF campaign, then popped in Crysis 2 for the first time.

I'm finding Crysis 2 to be pretty fun. Cranked up the difficulty to the highest possible, it's a lot more tactical than Halo or Call of Duty which is great. Only just reached the subway (barely 30 minutes of gameplay) but so far it's not nearly as nonlinear as Crysis, but that makes sense given the setting. Reminds me more of Crysis Warhead so far, not a bad thing. Also damn gorgeous, I've been waiting a long time to see CryEngine 3 on consoles and it hasn't disappointed.

I look forward to playing this on my Alienware over the summer. It's DX9 right now, but by then it'll be DX11 and I'll crank up the graphics to max and have myself a ball.

I know, I know, I said I wouldn't buy any new games until I finished what I had. And I'm sticking to that, this is a rental from Gamefly grin.gif

.

Haven't flown OFF too much lately. Been dividing most of my time between playing these:

"Spring Clean-up: Bloody April"

"Flood Watch 7"

"Storm Repair Reload"

"Midwest Highway Mayhem" with the Winter's Legacy expansion pack

"Keep The Missus Happy: Gold Edition"

"Family Wars: The Next Generation"

...and my favorite...

"Gettin' Old, 56" with the lack-of-energy and increased payload mods

I cranked up the difficulty on Crysis 2 to the highest. Damn challenging but fun, I thought it was a bit too easy on Veteran. Reminds me a lot of Arkham Asylum. Well, Arkham Asylum mixed with a Michael Mann film. This is a very dynamic, fun shooter, with raging gun battles and on-the-fly tactical thinking. Like when a helicopter fires a rocket that kills everyone around you but you survive because you entered armor mode at the last second and absorbed the damage. Very fun!

The enemy AI is generally quite good, but they have occasional pathfinding issues (sometimes you see them running endlessly into a wall). The multiplayer is also more fun than any other FPS multiplayer I've played since the first Modern Warfare game.

Fallout New Vegas

RTW

Shogun 2 Total War

Rugby 2005

Test Drive Unlimited 1 & 2

And eagerly awaiting Deus Ex Human Revolution (when it is finally released on PC)

CptRoyce, have you played SH3, and if so how does Sh5 compare to that, is SH5 all mission based, or do you get the chance to go off and do a bit of extra-curricular hunting after you have completed the assigned patrol grid?

Thanks

I have seen the "Baldur's (4 in 1 boxset)" at the local EB store. Have they removed the copy protection from that set?

If they have I may purchase it, if not off to GoG. But at the price they have the box set of 4 it is a lot cheaper than GoG.

I have heard a few good reviews of the series and are keen to try it, but I am getting used the the protection free games from GoG now so I want all the older titles with no protection.

As for Dragon Age II, I have finished it. It was not bad but only half a story, a primer for later DLC I would say. Wait to get it on special. for me the best part was the interaction between NPC's and your character.

Regards.

No they didn't remove it. But you know there's a general no cd "patch" that works in all infinity engine games, like BG, Icewind Dale and Planescape.

You've also to install the last patches with DVD version.

So the GoG are easier, only it's more expansive. If you want help for the nocd patch, PM.

If you don't mind with isometric views, and enjoy a real challenge game, don't hesitate and play BG. Also consider in playing BG1 with the BG2 engine. I've used also amod called Trilogy which unites both BGs. There's also the Big World mod, which from what I've read it's even superior to Trilogy.

For me BG2 is superior to the first. But I enjoyed also the first also. There's a big replaybility value with this game. I can play it differently, just by choosing another character, or opting for different alignments. It's a classical.

Thanks for the offer, I have sent a PM.

I think I will go for the DVD since it is cheaper.

One question though, how do you play BG1 with the BG2 engine? Is this what happens when you combine the two games with the Trilogy Mod? Is there a specific site to go to for the mods.

I am keen to try one of these older titles since most modern titles end too quickly, just when you start to get interested.

Basically yes. As far as the specific mods you can find them if you hit up the GoG forums for sure, that's where I got mine. I played BG1 with BG2's ending and with the marvelous NPC mod that breathed life into your otherwise mostly silent party members. Amazing experience, lovely game.

Modern games definitely end too damn soon and moreover have no sense of closure. It seems like they all just end, or have a dumb cliffhanger if you're lucky. Very few have satisfying endings that make you feel it was all worth it. Look at something like Bioshock, what the hell is the point of all that brilliance if they just end the game and send you off on your way on a whim? Designers need to incorporate some narrative principles dammit, I need closure and satisfaction in my endings, just as I do with any film or novel.

You can use this installation guide (the easiest so far that I've seen) in GoG forum if you intend to install Trilogy. This guide use more mods besides trilogy, and I advise that you use at least Fixpac and widescreen mod. Didn't use the tweak one.

http://www.gog.com/e...tial_mods/page1

Apply the nocd patch only after you've installed everything (including mods) and just for BG2. You can erase BG1 after installing trilogy.

Besides you need also just to install an official patch. This patch is for English users.

There's also a mod that might be important for people using higher resolutions. This will give you a bigger font. Unfortunately the mod is not fully optimized yet, but give it a try if you need bigger fonts.

Any doubt PM me or just follow the thread in GoG's forum.

After 10 years people are still modding, for BG. This tell you something about the quality of BG. I think in terms of story BG2 is much better than BG1. If you don't mind "reading" don't forget to read the books you find inside the houses. Like in DA:Origins they tell you a story.

Amazing to think it's been out over a decade now. Really hasn't been topped at all. It seems like today the higher the production values get the more narrative fidelity is pushed to the wayside. There's a few exceptions but not many!

DA:Origins would achieve probably that same level, if we add all the DLC to the main game.

I need to finish DA:O before I get to DA2. I mean, I did finish it but never did Leliana's Song or Witch Hunt, never got the two extra characters, and didn't play Awakenings. Plenty more to do in DA:O for me still when I get to it.

I can't match all you bods.

I constantly recycle my existing collection, hence in the moments when I'm not OFFing or trying to learn Java, I'll relax with either the Battleground series (Napoleonic and ACW), John Tiller's own excellent Napoleonic series covering 1809, or Talonsoft games, which, I would say are without doubt consummate games. I always wanted Squad Leader as a youth, but couldn't afford it, so Eastern Front, Western Front and Rising Sun plugged that gap very nicely.

As an old fart, I occasionally have to foray even further back in time, and I have the CPC6128 emulator on my PC which allows me to enjoy, if that's the word, Tau Ceti, Lords of Midnight and other blasts from my student days. All jolly good fun, and a world - literally - away from getting regularly filled in by Hun scouts and Archie.

Cheers,

Si
