Song in a YouTube Video causes nausea to me

Recommended Posts

Searching YouTube for videos about fighter pilots from WW1 and WW2, I came across a video

which seemed to have been uploaded by English or American users.

It was about the second-highest scoring German ace, Gerhard Barkhorn.

Now, what made me feel queasy was the use of the song "Horst Wessel Lied". Not only just

an instrumental, but the whole text version. Now, the English or American users may not know

that this song is forbidden here in Germany, nor may they understand the text of it.

Well, it is a song that glorifies the SA, the "Sturm-Abteilung" - the "storm troopers".

The "brown shirts" - those early uniformed hordes, that used beat up people who demonstrated

for their different opinions. They were the hordes, that burned books on bonfires. They were the

mainstay to help Hitler into the saddle.

They were the hordes that destroyed so many Jewish shops and synagoges in the "Reichs-

kristallnacht". They were not even part of Germany's military - they were a paramilitary group,

and they saw themselves as the "stewards of Germany".

More than any other symbol, their brown uniforms with the red arm band with the Swastika

stand for the people I would have hated back then. Violent, totalitarian, fashist people.

I hope very much, that YouTube will react now I made them aware of such audio contents.

I cannot see many videos in Germany, because the copyrights of the originators would be getting

infringed. That's alright.

But I do not want to hear any such fashist droning either.

Can you give us a URL at YouTube where we can second you message? I'll vote against the 'Horst Wessel Lied'.

Okay, here comes.

And let me make that clear: I don't know much of fighter pilot Gerhard Barkhorn, and can't say anything about him.

He wasn't even asked about the music, of course.

It's just the use of this song, that makes me sick.

If any of you gentlemen get a chance to see "Hitler..The Rise of Evil"...I strongly recommend it!..a fascinating history, told without prior prejudice...brilliantly acted..and it shows very well, the SA squaring up to the Soldiers of the German Army in the 1930's

I never knew, for instance...that Hitler was shot and wounded in this standoff!...just before he was arrested.

I understand perfectly, why you would feel so repulsed by this song Olham, as all sentient Human Beings should be....Once again, we see an upsurge of National Socialism in parts of both Europe and the United States...It MUST be crushed wherever in the world it raises it's evil, foul head!

One only has to look at the other video's in this 'persons' profile, to see he is obviously a fascist nut-job

I don't have a user account at Youtube, but I also hope they change the music in this video quickly.

We have enough trouble in this world without giving encouragement to the Fascists and skinheads!

Well, I lodged a protest at YouTube, ineffectual as it may be. There was no place I could find that really addressed the issue, or where I could create a good rant. There was only "Flag this as inappropriate" which then revealed a drop-down menu that gave five or so choices, the best of which was "Promotes Terrorism" which isn't exactly the point. Then I had to sign up for YouTube, create a Personal Channel in order to be able to post a comment. All that for 500 characters. Barely enough to get started. For what it's worth, here's the mini-rant:

"Someone should catch up with MrHEILDEMFURHER1 and slap him upside the head. If you're the sort of person who enjoys voting and free speech, personal liberty, and such like, then it's time to take a stand against the new "Nazi Creep", which is the tendency to see the Nazis as colorful, but tough, adversaries in a war fought long ago, but otherwise harmless."

Check the name of the bozo who posted the original video.

Unfortunately that movie is not very accurate historically. And the limited budget really shows in some places.

A much better and realistic look at what kind of a man Hitler was is Der Untergang (English title Downfall). Bruno Ganz does a frighteningly good job at portraying Hitler.

Regarding YouTube, that place is full of Nazi supporters and Nazi music.

Wow, that was a quick reaction: the video is not available in Germany anymore!

Now I only wonder, if you other nations' sons can still get it shown?

But even then - I'm glad it is "off limits" for the Germans now.

It sounds like a war march/camaraderie song. Just about every military service has them. Now what makes you quesy the fact that it was a song of the SS or is the songs content specific and detailed in what they did to the people who were not "The True Race" of Hitler. If so then yes it is in poor taste to use such a song.

You can still see it in the UK I'm afraid.

MAKO, it is a cameradery and marching song - even with a nice music - but it's the spirit of the song,

that it was specificly THE SA-song, what makes me sick about it.

Horst-Wessel-Lied was just not a military march, it was THE march of the Nazi Party. It was typically played together with the German national anthem in the Third Reich. The words praise Hitler and the sacrifices of the Nazi party members in their struggle for power.

It's madness!..they ban it now in Germany (probably the LEAST likely country to turn to National Socialism anytime soon)...yet allow it elsewhere!

I despair

These are difficult questions. I don't support any censorship, but I do understand how such music can be used wrong and how much it can offend people.

Don't despair, Widow - I guess most English speaking people won't understand the words.

Perhaps they (Youtube owners) should hack the tosser's account and implant a video of bodies being bulldozed at Belsen to the same Nazi tune. I hate nationalist bulls**t at the best of times, and that was nationalist bulls**t from the worst of times.

The idiot's who try to tell us "The Jewish Issue was a lie by the Allies"...are the same idiots, this bloke appears to be a member of...the Combat 18, EDL style thugs and Bullyboys.

They really should get a life!

Just so as you know, UKW, if you hear off the English Democrats setting up in the NE, give them a wide berth. It's the same BNP/EDL/NF thugs as usual, they've taken over said English Democrats. Avoid.

I just flagged it at YouTube as inappropriate, with a potential to promote hatred. I suggest anyone else who takes offense should do the same.

Cheers,

Yes, several of us have done so, Shredder, but it seems the only nation, where it got banned, is Germany so far.

From the name of the uploader of said (and other likewise) videos, they should probably ban the poster - obvious agenda ..

Have to confess, if I'd watched the video without your advice, I'd have dismissed the song with indifference, being unaware of it's significance. That's my omission and shortcoming I'm sure, but my point is the video is more likely to cause offence to people speak the language. By the standards of modern day, I would hate to contribute greater kudos to the music by seeing it banned.

It's a tricky / controversial subject. Personally, I like my history warts and all, with no holds barred and definitely no censorship, but at the same time I deeply respect the sensibilities of other people who do find such details offensive. Better a Nazi anthem ridiculed and jeered whenever it's heard, than a covert anthem shared by brotherhoods of hate which passes unnoticed by the masses.

Have you ever noticed in US or UK documentaries which feature Hitler, whenever his speech or written word is dubbed into English, it is always spoken in a seething, hateful or snarling voice? Surely the true lesson about evil people is that they are not snarling monsters all the time but also possess an immense and powerful capacity to charm the unwary.

I also think being easily offended is meat and drink to those peole who want to offend us. I would much rather see such willful offence silenced at source by ridicule and derision rather than censorship.

You have to speak German to be shocked when recognizing the original Nazi version, as for what I know, the HW-Lied has been parodied in countless anti-Nazi political or burlesque versions, keeping the music but changing the German lyrics. If not speaking German you could confuse the Nazi content for completely anti-Nazi lyrics. Are these other versions also forbidden in Germany, just because using the HW-Lied music?

By the way, Olham, I'd like some advice regarding German military music. I plan to update my Medals Pack for First Eagles, refreshing for instance the Reich's musics with "Preussens Gloria" as an intro, and "Die wacht am Rhein" as a mission success music. Does the second one reflect an "acceptable" level of nationalism regarding WW1? Or definetely not?

Good points, Flyby.

Well, I guess not. Parody on the Nazis is usually allowed. They had in my case not even traced the HW-Lied at YouTube.

They only banned it, after Hauksbee, some others and I had marked it.

Well, I will check the text and the time, when it was written. The Prussian military music might of course be anti-French.

The two nations had their wars, hadn't they? I'll report.
