Intruder7011 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Just curious about tail hook realism in the game... I just finished my computer build so I still havent been able to install and play the games, so this may be a dumb question... Are the Naval/Marine Corps aircraft the only ones that have tail hooks, and is there a way to create a mod to add emergency arresting gear to land based runways? I was an aircraft recovery specialist in the USMC from 03-07 and from looking at the screens it seems like its not available and would be a good addition to have, not sure about foreign planes but I know all US military fixed fighter/attack have tail hooks. It would be great if you don't just blow up on landing if you are damaged (dont know, still havent flown the game). If thats the case it would be awesome to be able to take damage and divert/come in to a land based airbase and take an emergency trap and survive....
+Wrench Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 unfortuneately, there's no way (at least, none we've ever discovered) to add them to the airfield inis
+Fubar512 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Carriers are ground objects, airfields are not, and as such, do not presently have the necessary .dll coding to accept arresting gear entries.
+Stary Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 then make stationary (no engine 0 speed) carrier model using stock runway model and try it this way
+Fubar512 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 (edited) then make stationary (no engine 0 speed) carrier model using stock runway model and try it this way That would probably work, but it's going to hell hand placing one on every airfield in the X_terrain_data.ini file Edited April 3, 2012 by Fubar512
+Stary Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 (edited) hmmm, I thought 0,0 offset from airfield is allways in the middle of the runway? If so placing them would be just two coordinates copy&paste but it was "just" me thinking out loud edit: my knowlegde of the runway recovery systems equals to zero so I don't know if the position would be closer to standard touchdown point or not. Also I guess barricade nets would have use on runways too(?) but these aren't modelled in any sim I guess Edited April 3, 2012 by Stary
+SkateZilla Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Build Airfield in max, set it up as a carrier, Edit Water Maps for Terrain, Place Airfield on the water spot as a Carrier, remove engine / power plant or change off road / max speed to Zero to make it stationary. wave good bye to lighting at night though.
+Fubar512 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 You dont have to build anything in Max. The data.ini will work without a model file.
+Stary Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 (edited) wave good bye to lighting at night though. model ONLY arresting gear and needed bits of ini, place it ontop of existing runway, enjoy the lights at night edit: what Ed have said, ini alone should do fine Edited April 3, 2012 by Stary

Also I guess barricade nets would have use on runways too(?) but these aren't modelled in any sim I guess M-21 gear is in the middle of the airfield and its the deployable system.. well old system, but the E-28 emergency gear is placed at the ends of the runway... its been a while since I was in but maybe 1000 feet from the thresholds, they are marked by a black sign with a big yellow circle
+PureBlue Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 model ONLY arresting gear and needed bits of ini, place it ontop of existing runway, enjoy the lights at night Lights for airfields don't work in the IcelandNA terrain, anybody notice? Still works on other terrains I think.
Intruder7011 Posted April 3, 2012 Author Posted April 3, 2012 Looks like the locations vary, but are within 1000 and 2000 foot markers. At Futenma air station in Okinawa they are 1407 away from the threshold on 06 and 1151 from 24's threshold.
Intruder7011 Posted April 3, 2012 Author Posted April 3, 2012 No worries, if you need anything else let me know. They are 'roll in' type arresting gear, so aircraft would usually touch down well before the cable and just roll into it to snag the wire. I know fresnel lenses are a no go for the game, so I am assuming PAPI's are as well.....

From 08-12 I was a Harrier power plants mech.
