Need info for an aspiring SEAL member

I got a friend who is 17 (she'll be 18 on June 8th.) and really is thinking of being a SEAL. But she has a medical condition. She asked me directly to help her to find info regarding if she can be in the training. She had a brain tumor taken out few years ago and now has migraines and taking meds for ADD, sleeping and meds for her migraines. She also has short term memory lost (from her operation). She says that her migraines are in fact better and she thinks once her muscles are fully restored the headaches will stop. She wants to join the military because she wants to help. She wants to be in the front lines though, not in the side lines. From I tell from our conversation on FaceBook, she is very serious about this and will commit to the challenge. I know her for few years now and I think she'll charge through the challenges ahead with no regrets. However I told her that her memory loss might be a factor and some other issues. I heard that if a woman passes the SEAL training, she'll be in combat? Is that true?

 

I hope you guys can help me to help you with her life goal.

 

My questions are: Is her medical condition a factor? What info she needs for recruitment especially she has medical issues?

IIRC, SEALs are a no go for women, despite i heard something about an all-out integration. So would be for most US combat branches. There are some, like USAF security, in wich i think there were even female snipers, and MPs are open to women and taking a more important part in operations. However, i doubt she will get clearance with the health issues you mentioned.

 

I too know what it means to be unfit for a service you want to give (how many of us are not pilots because of vision?) For me, i´ve got the career issue almost solved, however, i remember a buddy wich had a malformation in one hand and was a nice war nerd willing to do his part. He is studying Law, a couple of courses below me, and will be as much as an useful good man, wich is what mankind needs, as any.

Okay with regards the US Military I am not so sure but I think the same rules would apply as the UK in that she would not be accepted for military duty due to her medical conditions. Sometimes the will is there but the body fails... I have seen this happen as a friend of mine it turns out had problems with her lungs which was not picked up until after she had entered into the military but in training it showed up and they cashed her out...

this is a bad time for getting in even if all is perfect, with the draw down currently in place. a few years ago probably could've gotten a waiver easy but now recruiting stations are putting the not hiring sign out, figurativly speaking.

I'm pretty sure her medical issues will exclude her from any frontline sort of role, as well as being a pilot or any other type of position where a sudden problem could be fatal.

 

There are plenty of noncombat roles that need to be filled as well, and her filling one of those would free up someone who could be on the sharp end of the stick from being relegated to a support role.

 

I can't speak as to the overall staffing levels and needs vs quotas, but it won't hurt for her to visit a recruiter as long as she has realistic expectations that she might not get exactly what she wants.

Well I talked to my friend few hours ago. I told her what you guys said. She says that her condition will be temporary. She'll visit her doctors soon for a check up. She'll talk to her doctors about this I think from our conversation earlier this evening.
