Falklands 2

Recommended Posts

My desktop will soon be upgraded by my brother next week with a new graphics card, so I thought I'd better stock up on a few e-books for my tablet in its absence. After a little browsing on Amazon; I came across this interesting number and decided to give it a try:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Falklands-Argentinas-Back-Different-ebook/dp/B007TO3QFQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366907348&sr=8-1&keywords=falklands+2

Even before reading it it's making me wonder how it'd work out on a campaign........

Sounds a little dated now, as it was written in the late 90s, but takes place in THEIR future which is now OUR past.

Regardless of the book's details, though, the idea of a modern-day repeat of that conflict is certainly good fodder for an SF2 campaign.

There were a couple of higher profile novels covering a second Falklands war that I know of:

Exclusion Zone by John Nichols - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Exclusion-Zone-Nichol-John/dp/034071879X/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1366982131&sr=1-5

Land of Fire by Chris Ryan - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Land-Fire-Chris-Ryan/dp/0099432382

I've not read them so don't know how good they are, but there's no questioning the two authors' experience.

I found this what-if article on the MailOnline website - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2077813/Falkland-Islands-Prince-Harry-captured-600-soldiers-killed--imagined-Dominic-Sandbrook.html

A very funny potted history history of the real Falklands war written as if reviewing an implausible alternative history technothriller - http://www.changingthetimes.net/samples/brooks/review_of_the_alternate_history.htm

And talking of SF2 scenarios, how about this alternative history of the original Falklands war where we Brits lose. The detailed descriptions of the air/sea battles of 10th May 1982 are crying out for some custom missions. - http://www.changingthetimes.net/samples/coldwar/falklands_war_1982.htm

I've got it and it's "interesting" There's some fairly good parts but there's a bit too much use of a Get of of Jail Free plot device involving either "Innovative Thinking" or "Secret Tactics" by the UK military that always saves the day (i.e radical ideas proposed by junior officers which work flawlessly). Sadly from my experience we just don't have the right breed of officers who can do that kind of innovative thinking in places where they could make a difference any more. We've become almost Russian in our slavish adherence to Training Manuals and woe-betide anyone who even thinks about doing something outside of the extremely rigid "Only do what the book says until we've spent years thoroughly examining every aspect of any proposed change" current military thinking, by which time usually the original threat has now changed probably twice more meaning we're even further behind yet again etc etc. Not that I'm bitter you understand

Even well-written novels about changed outcomes are not my cup of tea. I guess in some way it does not serve well those, on both sides, who faced the reality firsthand. Piecemeal, love your personal icon. Can you send me a copy?
