UH-1: USMC Vietnam Skin Pack


This is a collection of seven skins representing US Marine Corps squadrons and spanning the length of the Vietnam War. The squadrons included are:

  • VMO-2
  • VMO-3 (which became HML-367)
  • VMO-6
  • HML-167

I have included two versions of HML-367: a 1968 version (when VMO-3 was redesignated as HML-367) and a 1975 version that flew in Operation: Frequent Wind, the evacuation of Saigon. Additionally, HML-167 is represented by modexes TV-29 and TV-30.

Skinner's Philosophy:

 

I chose to model the skins as "modern aircraft with nostalgic patterns", as opposed to actual Vietnam era skins. This is because the UH-1H (and not the UH-1E) is modeled, and slso because the 3D models used for the aircrew utilize more modern flight gear. The significance of this is that I have chosen to skin the aircrew in contemporary flight uniforms, including MARPAT body armor for the door gunners. I felt that this was more fitting in a setting that involves modern orders of battle, and is also less of an immersion-killer than seeing Vietnam era "uniforms" on clearly modern equipment.

 

 

A note about the Crew Chief & Door Gunner:

 

Since enlisted US troops don't wear rank/rate insignia on flightsuits, their rank/rate is displayed on their nametag. Since there are no specific nametag textures for the crew chief/door gunner texture, I have added a nametag to the velcro on the chest armor (as is standard practice).

 

In choosing names for the texture, I opted for US servicemembers who received the Medal of Honor. CPL Jason Dunham was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in the Global War on Terror, and with the exception VMO-6 (represented by GySgt Leroy Paulson, who was the actual crew chief), represents the Unites States Marine Corps in these skins. The following is his Medal of Honor citation:

 

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as Rifle Squad Leader, 4th Platoon, Company K, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines (Reinforced), Regimental Combat Team 7, First Marine Division (Reinforced), on 14 April 2004. Corporal Dunham's squad was conducting a reconnaissance mission in the town of Karabilah, Iraq, when they heard rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire erupt approximately two kilometers to the west. Corporal Dunham led his Combined Anti-Armor Team towards the engagement to provide fire support to their Battalion Commander's convoy, which had been ambushed as it was traveling to Camp Husaybah. As Corporal Dunham and his Marines advanced, they quickly began to receive enemy fire. Corporal Dunham ordered his squad to dismount their vehicles and led one of his fire teams on foot several blocks south of the ambushed convoy. Discovering seven Iraqi vehicles in a column attempting to depart, Corporal Dunham and his team stopped the vehicles to search them for weapons. As they approached the vehicles, an insurgent leaped out and attacked Corporal Dunham. Corporal Dunham wrestled the insurgent to the ground and in the ensuing struggle saw the insurgent release a grenade. Corporal Dunham immediately alerted his fellow Marines to the threat. Aware of the imminent danger and without hesitation, Corporal Dunham covered the grenade with his helmet and body, bearing the brunt of the explosion and shielding his Marines from the blast. In an ultimate and selfless act of bravery in which he was mortally wounded, he saved the lives of at least two fellow Marines. By his undaunted courage, intrepid fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Dunham gallantly gave his life for his country, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

 

CPL Dunham is also the namesake of the USS Jason Dunham (DDG-109), the Marine Corps Security Force barracks in Kings Bay, GA, and Crucible stations at both MCRD Parris Island and MCRD San Diego.

 

Updating from Version 1.04 or earlier:

 

DCS World 1.2.7 changes the pilot and gunner texture files, so the textures have been updated accordingly in this file. In order to clear out the obsolete files, go to the individual folders and remove the following files:

  • Gunner_UH1_*.dds
  • Pilot_UH1_USMC.dds

Installation:

Copy the folders to your Liveries\uh-1h folder (either in DCS World\Bazar or Saved Games\DCS).

 

Optional:

The release of DCS World 1.2.4 added the ability to add texture paths using the file "autoexec.cfg" in your Saved Games\DCS\Config folder. This will allow you to save hard drive space as long as the skin filenames are unique. My skins support this, so any DDS file with the same name will be identical.

 

In order to enable this feature, add the following line to autoexec.cfg (be sure to create the file if it doesn't exist):

table.insert(options.graphics.VFSTexturePaths, "C:/Users/<username>/Saved Games/DCS/Textures")

You can use any path (even a different drive), but you must use forward slashes for your path. Backslashes won't work here.

 

Then, you can move all of the DDS files from each of the skin folders to this new folder you've added to your path. Allowing overwrites is not a problem, as I use unique names for each file. Finally, be sure to go into each description.lua file and change all "false" entries to "true."

You are free to use any of the textures (e.g. USMC door gunner) in other skins or projects as long as proper credit is provided in the readme file.

      This is a revamp of Wrenchs Update of 331Killerbees TA-4F FastFAC-Pack. ;)
      Skins have been redone in greater resolution with more details. Decals are new (although original Decals are still there). Some bits of the plane are removed by ini-edit and exchanged by FakePilot-Addons to add more details and get rid of the shadow-issue caused by the outer wing pylons.
      5 new Droptanks are added (2x 150gal, 2x300gal, 1x400gal).
      BuNos are always correct for the squadron and many are also correct for the plane, although sources and pictures are very rare.
      H&MS-11 comes in 3 variations (CAG, Large Stripe + Bunny on Tail and Small Stripe without Bunny) that were used side by side as it seems
      H&MS-12 has CAG-Bird
      H&MS-13 has 2 Skins - The one from the original pack was used after Vietnam, but I redid it and included it. The one used in Vietnam has no special markings and a different Tailcode-style. I only found 1 pic as reference, so maybe other variation are possible too.

      Installation
      ============
      1. unzip to a temporary folder
      2. open "Put_Content_In_Your_MOD folder" and do as you were told, if asked to overwrite, say 'yes' :P
      3. enjoy!
      If the Squadron is missing in the loadout screen, you should add the following lines in the squadronlist.ini ("<mod>\pilotdata"-folder) with XXX changed to the next free numbers:

      We'd also like to take this time to update you on a few of our projects:
      DCS World 2.5
      Work is going well with all content complete and all blocking bugs resolved! Work though continues on tuning the map and updating paid campaigns that need to be adjusted for the map changes. This primarily entails moving units out of the many new forested areas on the map. We want this move to DCS World 2.5 to be as bug-free as possible.

      We have the holiday season fast approaching in Russia, and we need to give our staff time with their loved ones.
      Given this, we will be releasing DCS World 2.5 by the end of January 2018. This is not an estimate, this is a promise.
      DCS World 2.5 will be released as a new download (NOT an update to an existing version).
      Modules under DCS World 1.5 and 2.2 will not need to be re-downloaded or activated. Just do not uninstall DCS World 1.5 and DCS World 2.2 Open Alpha prior to installing DCS World 2.5 Stable, as 2.5 will copy the modules over from 1.5 and 2.2. This should greatly reduce the amount of time to update to DCS World 2.5.
      Any files in your Users/Saved Games folder will not be affected.
      Movement of DCS World 2.5 would then soon follow to Steam.
      DCS: F/A-18C Hornet
      We and Belsimtek have been working long hours to bring the Hornet to an Early Access release state. Over the past few months, a lot of our time has been devoted to modeling the many fundamental systems that comprise the aircraft like the engines, fuel, electrical, hydraulic, flight control system, and many others. We are now starting to see the fruits of this labor, as evidence of the recent Hornet preflight, startup, taxi, and takeoff videos.

      Before we can release the Early Access version though, there are several important features we need to implement:
      Weapon HUD modes Moving map Countermeasures Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) Inertial Navigation System for Waypoints Flight Model Further development of the air-to-air radar Integration of new weapons Improve some of the cockpit art, display fonts, and HUD projection effect Once these items are completed, we plan to release the Hornet into Early Access and we believe it will be an amazing experience!

      DCS: Strait of Hormuz Map

      Our next combat theater map will be the Strait of Hormuz. All of the fundamental work on this map is complete and we are not tuning the elevation mesh, textures, and cleaning up bugs. We expect to release this map in the not-to-distant future and we believe it will be a great home for the Hornet and carrier operations!
      DCS: Yak-52
      As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, this will be an entertainment version of the Yak-52 we are developing for a commercial client. The Yak-52 will launch our new technology for radial engine dynamics which will provide a very realistic engine performance and management. This will be an extremely detailed and realistic simulation of the Yak-52 that will teach by-the-book training and aerobatics. Work is going very well and we are now focusing on the instrumentation and tuning the flight dynamics.

      We're sure this will be a great lead-in aircraft for new DCS World players and provide a great progression of Russian combat aviation.

      I have finally been able to purchase a decent more recent model PC. I have MS CFS2 & SFP1 running great on it. With all the hard-drive space I have created many installs with specific planes loaded in each install so the random mission generator button will load appropriate planes.
      With MS CFS2 I like that you can define groups of enemy planes to chose from, but it messes up if you dump all your planes in one install.
      Strike Fighters 1 doesn't seem to restrict appropriate planes to showing up when flying over a terrain even if you define friendly and enemy planes in that terrain's 'nations' file.
      What I would like to do is upgrade to a more recent combat flight sim(s). I say sims because Id be surprised to find a game i liked for both WWII props AND jet (missile) combat.
      Yes...I'd like some improvement in graphics, but I like the realism (flight mode;s) to be realistic as possible. I do realize the 'air' file or 'data' file creater or modifiers have a huge impact on flight model realism. For example, I can only remember losing a F-4 to an uncontrolable spin once and that was a stock plane not a mod; while, my MiG-29 will spin if you pull to many Gs at a low airspeed (to much AOA) and its a mod add-on!
      Anyway, looking at pics online it appears that folks are really doing a good job on aircraft for more recent sims...and terrains.
      Can anyone give me some input on what would be a good combat sim buy(s)? 
      My budget is limitted and I can not buy everything out there to see if i like it like back in the day when i had less responsibility.
      Oh, I do think i want to get MS FSX to get modern graphics. There's a payware F-4J/S Phantom available that I think I want.
      However, the VC and skin of my F-4s in Strike Fightes 1 is pretty good really. I would imagine there's probably some pretty good free mod planes for a more recent combat simZ. I'm not THAT picky...I've been living with sims that came out practically in the last millinium for Jeez sake.
